It's the wrong shape Jim

So, movement trays and square bases and all that.
Pretty normal stuff.

Curved perimeters for woods/forests.
Pretty standard.

But what about when you have square trays and a round edge and you want to get your troops within 2" of the edge so they can shoot, but the trays don't fit the wood area?
You either get units part in/part out, or completely in but not all models are within 2" so they can't all see?

Am I the only one that does rectangular shaped woods to avoid this, or do you fudge it, or do something else?

Think this is more of a rules question but... in 3rd and 4th I believe they rules don't take movement trays into account. For example, if a unit is climbing over a hedge, it allows one rank to be on side, and the rest on the other as still being a formed unit as if all together.. and there are rules for Snaking.. which is said for a good way to get around obstacles, so in this case it would say they would probably need to snake if they wanted to..

rule wise, it is a case of 'use your own judgement'. to decide if a unit is in is classed as in all in, part in, or what.. I don't know if they cleared it up a bit more but... what I remember and a quick check through the rules, blurs it alot and mostly says 'use your own judgement' or in the earlier versions 'a third party GM'

I don't do rectangular woods, does look too unrealistic to my eye.

I mostly don't use movement trays, so I can curve a unit following the contour of the wood. The leader represents the "actual position" when the unit gets charged or in edge range cases etc. Worked always pretty well, so far.

3rd does not use trays indeed, but they are a convenience, the unit would still be in formation in a straight line and the problem would still occur.

More curious what other people do.

^_^

its been way too long since I played an army game which used trays, even though I'm putting my Skaven on them.. It atleast keeps them together for storage ^_^
