It's not old but...

Zhu Bajie

After making blue-tack boobs for a female space marine, my second ever conversion was sticking a plastic head of a skaven from this:

onto a body of a space marine body of one of these:

So you can imagine the nostalgia that these beauties gave me?

Games Workshop are so Oldhammer, they don't even know it.

I never could decide whether I'd made a Rat Headed Mutant Space Marine, or a Power Armoured Skaven, or if it was just an ornate helmet. I think he got named after my pet hamster.

Mini-fucking-guns!
And why is that other guy pointing a ball blam burglerber?

   for skaven, it's Nerf, or nuthin'!

Zhu, i think you need to revisit that conversion, maybe have an all-beastman squad in power armour  maybe have a boar in terminator armour!

I'm reaaaally curious to hear Jez' thoughts on those.

only thing I like about those is the semi homage to TMNTs with the brainrat in the back of one of the models.

I wonder too...when I spoke with him 18 months or so ago he gave the impression he'd passed on creative control of most things apart from Eldar which he viewed as his personal baby. In practical terms I guess it would be difficult to retain ownership given the diversion from the original vision.

I haven't seen any really successful plastic skaven. Plastic just isn't good for fur. The original ones in the army box were probably the best and even then you had to carve out between the ears. Those rat ogre things really are an abomination (and not in a good way).

I was actually in GW today buying paints and I saw a mini I wanted to buy!

but I gave it back when he told me it was 20 quid!

What do you have for trade? I've never even opened mine

they suck but the close combat hand options are better. The other paint schemes on the gw page help too.

Meh, despite liking the original Jes models the most, I'm a big fan of everything Skaven released since their most recent "update" (late 7th/early 8th onward).

These, however, and the rest of the "End Times" Skaven releases don't do it for me at all. The naked packmasters welded to their backs don't look right either :( For some reason I do like the Thanquol and absurdly large Boneripper though, depending on how much cheaper I can get it.

I wonder too..

I think Jez has said he doesn't really like conversions. Makes sense, he has an idea and fleshes it out, and that's it. So I don't think he'd have been a fan of my Space Marine Skaven.

Doubt I'll ever have an opportunity to sit down and chat miniatures design with Jes, but would probably end up talking about 80s goth-synth bands or something equally irrelevant.

Hey, I like that dwarf / vampire thing. Sculpting on the braids looks off tho' but the idea is amusing in an odd Hammer Horror kind of way.

I'm with you

The 7th edition skaven felt like a continuation of the Oldhammer style. It's amazing how long it took them to start making nice rats again. These have too much tech and I despise the vermin lords.

Speaking as a lover of Skaven I f**king hate these.

7th and 8th edition plastic Skaven were better than previous incarnations but the originals are still the best and nothing else even comes close.

These Thundercat rejects just suck *rse.......................................

Can someone point me to some pictures of the 7th ed Skaven? I'm curious now...

I need to bulk out mine very slightly, I'm not too proud to go into the current millenium.

But I agree with Snickit - those pics that this thread are really about are just wrong!

the old ones are soooo hard to paint though. those fancy plastics are wonderful compared to how busy the goidwin skaven can be with details. I love the old stuff but after painting four skaven armies....

Horde armies are a labour of love granted, I've painted three Skaven armies now so not quite achieved your four but even so, the original leads still reign supreme in Snickitland.

Must be something about Skaven heads. My first two successful conversions (as in didn't look terrible) were the two skaven heads from the fantasy warriors box on top of plastic Imperial guard. I used them as mystic, space ninja types.

I like big monsters, robots, guns, swords, skeletons well the list goes on but current GW stuff just doesn't seam to be able to make stuff that appeals from those raw ingredients.

Skaven heads do rock. I've just received that beauty :

file.php

Nothing to had, I might still update that model to integrate some RT games though...

Who ever made that made it for the sheer joy of it. I'd take that conversion over the new Skaven GW stuff any day.
