I have an ongoing "Let's Read" about AEG's Clan War Daimyo Edition over on RPG.net, and the more I review the book, the more I am convinced that AEG was making a revised edition of Warhammer Fantasy Battle 3rd Edition. There are not only remarkable mechanical similarities (a reserve movement phase, one complex maneuver or three simple maneuvers per turn with the first one free, retreating from melee, a long list of formations and maneuvers, unformed status, differentiation between leadership and cool). There is also a similar spirit between the two games (characters are there to support regiments, an explicit nod to historical wargaming with weapons and tactics, a focus on the uncontrollable disorder of the battlefield at odds with the general's ability to carefully coordinate complex maneuvers and strategies).
So what is going on here? Were game designers like Ken Carpenter just nostalgic over WFB3e almost a decade after it had been replaced by later editions of Warhammer?
