Interesting video from wargames illustrated... John Blanche

Re: Interesting video from wargames illustrated... John Blan

Sorry. Posted on the move. So it appears Wargames illustrated has come into ownership of some very old Blanche painted mini's. Going to have to get the new issue for a better look.

That is an awesome video - amazing he can get that level of detail and originality with oils

Re: Interesting video from wargames illustrated... John Blan

That's brilliant. Thanks for pointing it out!

Some of Jes Goodwins Asgard Orcs (available from Viking Forge) in there, heavily converted Tom Meier Ral Partha Elf Chariot (at Iron Wind Metals) horse.

Anyone spot any more?

Great stuff.

Suddenly I feel less hopeless about my freehands. Maybe one day I will get a decent checkboard if it's not inborn XD .

Excellent video, thanks for sharing! Such beautiful paintjobs, and inspiring in that they are early Blanche works. It really brings out the best from the miniatures.

I would have loved the article to be several pages longer with more snaps. Great to see this cool stuff.

Thanks for sharing, it was great to see some of those models up close. Amazing how much painted detail was added to the models, I'm so used to painting just what is there and not really thinking about what I could add by painting in new details.

Re: Interesting video from wargames illustrated... John Blan

Controversial statement maybe but I don't actually like John's style on minis. Paintings yes, especially the earlier stuff that go absorbed into the 3rd ed rulebook, but there's something about his figures that leaves me cold. Nice to see a bit of history crop up in the glossy (but not as glossy as a Blanche miniature!) world of modern wargaming.

I think the incredible part is that they are all painted in enamels.

Re: Interesting video from wargames illustrated... John Blan

^I honestly think enamels worked better than acrylics as they were thinner to begin with and took longer to dry, so you could more easily blend them. They are also substantially more durable. The only real downsides are that you need to use turpentine or mineral spirits to thin them and they don't store as well. (Well, and they're a little slower working, since they don't dry as quickly. You have to stage things considerably more, which encourages batch painting.) The end results were absolutely on a par with modern acrylics, but it took more time and work. So these days I use acrylics.

But every now and then I think about switching back.

While I agree with Finn, John's style is not my favourite. The level of detail is extraordinary and really set a new standard back in the day.
