Well needless to say, having said I'll be running a game at BOYl 2014, I thought at least one practice game of 2nd edition Warhammer would be worth while, prior to the event. To this end, Grumdil & I made our plans and made our way to Abingdon to set to with just cause & purpose - to put our will & arms to the test. What following is my brief description of what I thought happened, needless to say I'm sure Grumdil has his opinion? Sorry no photos as I forgot to bring a camera, but Paul did and will not doubt stick up a few pictures with his response in due course.

A squabble too far!
Well, the forces of evil were certainly aboard in & around Abingdon last night – A mixed force of Chaos warriors & Goblinoids clashed with a force of Dark Elves over a hovel/farmstead within the swamps of the Southlands! No locals were involved in the fight as both antagonists had given more than enough notice that something was going to happen by the way they’d been thrashing their way through the area and generally making a nuisance of themselves!

The forces were about of an equal size and approached the area from opposite sides of the hovels, the chaos/goblinoids having the advantage with the high ground, on which they installing a bolt thrower overlooking the farm below, the dark elves took the initiative moving to the edge of the fields and scrubland from their deployment zone to mask their approach & watch where their foes did next. The chaos/goblinoids were lined up along the skyline so could be seen from most of the table; hence, their intention of leading with the goblinoids soon fell into trouble as a group of boy'z gave into their tendency of in-fighting as they weren’t too happy with having a bolt thrower crew on their flank ( As they’d obviously said something during the march!); so they turned and charge the crew with the intention of putting them in their rightful place (6’ under), despite the protests of their general! Needless to say the elves found this highly amusing as the wolf riders moved into an area of swamp and the Arrer boy’z moved to the front slope of the hill they were sited on, watching the happening on their flank, bemused; the forces of chaos moved forward ignoring the conflict to their left. Luckily, for the squabbling didn’t inflict any casualties, but the chiefs attempts to stop the fight came to naught.

The Elves seeing an opportunity rushed forward to the next hedge line and spying two lumbering minotaur crashing through the hedge on the far side of the field, loosed a volley from the repeating crossbow unit and a couple of lighting bolts from the wizard – taking down one of the beasts, the warriors on the right continued their steady advance towards the squabbling goblinoids. As for their opponents - the surviving minator passed its moral check, but thinking that discretion the better part of valour, retired to the far side of the hedge. the chaos warriors continued their advance followed by their level one wizard, who let loose a single bolt of lighting towards the unit which had caused the minotaur to retire and inflicted a casualty, the continuing fighting between the bolt thrower crew & the boy’s continued - again, no one was lost; however, the chief did manage the get the boy’z under control, only to have crew launch a revenge attack - so the fight continued! The arrer boy’z with no one the shoot at, continued to watch the tiff, whilst the wolf rider extricated themselves from the swamp.

Following discussion between the players it was agreed that although the minotaur had retired behind the hedge, as he was a large target he was still in line of sight and therefore the Dark Elf bowmen could now take a shot with all the appropriate modifiers - needless to say, feeling like a pincushion the minotaur retired behind a clump of trees and contempt his place in the world, during his next turn. This freed up the repeating xbow unit & wizard to let fly at the chaos warriors - inflicting a few wound causing them to take a moral test which they passed with ease; the elf warrior unit continued their steady advance on the right just outside range of the arrer boy’z. The squabbling orcs continued their rumble with the crew of causing a single casualty, suitably chastised for their tomfoolery, both sides finally called it quits and got back to the business of war with someone else other than themselves! The chaos warriors moved to the edge of the farmstead, with the wizard following in their wake sending off another lighting bolt at the repeating xbow unit this time causing another two wounds; The arrer boy’z moved off the hill and into the scrub to their front followed by the wolf riders on their flank.

Seeing the field to their front clear of the enemy, the Dark Elf bow unit advanced led by their hero; the repeating xbow unit drew a line on the wizard, stood on his lonesome and three of them loosed off a few hasty shots which sent him to whatever pit of despair was prepared to take him; the Dark Elf wizard seeing the Chaos warriors amongst the hovels loosed off another two bolts of lighting this time taking down another two warriors, s ever their passed their moral test with flying colours; The Dark Elf warriors on the right seeing that the coast was clear of the arrer boy’s (they were on the other side of the scrub, having come off the hill) advanced towards the wolf riders flanks and bided their time! Now with their squabbles behind them the remaining orcs boldly marched towards the enemy, however the surviving chaos warriors and minotaur cautiously held their ground waiting for their allies to catch up before launching their attack; the wolf riders seeing their feared enemy on their flanked, turned to face and waited for the inevitable attack!

The final phase of the game come into play with the hero accompanying the bow unit - going hunting for minotaur horns, for his collection; the bows drew a bead on arrer boy’s; the wizard leaving only two chaos warriors holding the village; the repeating xbow unit lining the edge of the village waiting for the warrior to move and the wolf riders routing away from the charge of the dark elf warriors.

At this point the evening was drawing to a close, so in the spirit of game we called it a draw, with a lot of lessons learned - The rules a loose and leave a lot to interpretation, so play the game and enjoy it.

Thanks Paul

Thanks for the game Paul, and the write-up.

Sad to say that my chaos warriors found it that doesn't matter how spikey your armour is - tactical ineptitude will still get you killed! A good learning experience though - we'll hopefully find out soon if I have learned anything from it...
