How to remove HeroQuest bases?

Guys, any suggestions about how to remove HeroQuest bases? I'd like to put the heroes on a classic rounded base but I tried with a goblin and the miniature exploded in pieces!!! :o

A X-Acto knife under the feet does the trick, failing that clippers and small clips (Its what I done)

The last time I tired, I used side cutter pliers. Snip small pieces off from the edges, working around. Once you're left with just the base under the feet slice it in stages from the bottom, of that makes sense. Yeah, if you dive right in you get exploding miniatures

By the way, I'm surprised how much I like the simple hand/weapon conversions for those two. Reading the thread that pic is form, using the "eye of Sauron" shield bosses glued back to back for the staff is a great idea!

If you use Clippers you would have to nibble it slowly off so that you do not cause stress due to torque and shearing forces.
A fine saw would be better. Use several cuts through the base making the character look like he is wearing concrete shoes.
Remove some more of the base with horizontal cuts and then sand down the rest.

I've removed similar bases using a new razor blade. You can just align it flat with the feet and gently work it back and forth to separate the model from the base.

ok, thanks for the sugesstions.
I also was thinking to put the miniatures under very hot water so the plastic will become softer. Do you guys think it may be useful or is it just an un-needed step?

Un needed step says I.

I've done a whole set and not had any disasters using the methods described here, small clips and then shave off those concrete shoes.
Careful of those flimsy Skelly legs though ;)

Wot 'im said.

I got blisters from my clippers when doing my set. =( Might not happen if you do anything else for a living than hammer away on a keyboard though...

Having asked this exact same question here, I took the plunge and used clippers for my fimir and it worked out fine - hard work though, and might be an idea to wear goggles with all the shards of plastic flying around!

If you make small clips there are no shards flying. Even better!

It's important to remember to not make clips "edge to edge". Never take a piece off the base in one clip. In that case you'll have shards flying. =) Instead, I start by taking a wedge out of the base by doing two clips.

I'll give a reward to the first person to model and paint a full party of heroquest heroes wearing platform sole boots ( with appropriate garish colour scheme to match). Gold lamè pants, silk shirts, lycra lycra lycra!

Asslessman or Cheetor have more than likely already made a start on this

Ages ago I made some chaos marines from the HQ chaos warriors. I actually incorporated their base into the scenic elements by hacking at it and scoring the surface to go for rubble/flagstones. WHy not try removing some of the flat surface of the base and incorporating the HQ base as part of the basing decoration? Sadly the marines in question are long gone otherwise I'd post a pic.

To avoid the problems with blisters when clipping solid bases off I recommend using thin work gloves like the ones you can get from B&Q. Unfortunately I only thought to do this after clipping 90 odd bases off.

I haven't tried Heroquest plastic but in the past I've cut lots off by just cutting with a scalpel along the bottom of the foot. Rocking the scalpel backward and forward should steadily cut into it until it comes away.
