Hess Poisonbreath

Inspired by Orlyg's speed painting frenzy I set about a chaos sorceror I bought cleaned and primed on ebay. I failed and needed roughly 2.5 hours for him so it can hardly be called speed painting but then the osl and a mix of unfamilar colors didn´t help. Besides that it normally takes me 60 minutes to find my chaos black paint pot.
The base and shaing of the robe as well as the non white parts of the OSL effect were done with the airbrush while the metals are a trusty combination of inks, that favourite Rackham brown and metalic medium.

Even in 2.5 hours, it is still incredibly short a time to come up with a model as beautiful as this one !

The organic look of teh staff and the OSL are very well done and really add something (those techniques can often be overused as a technical display imho)

Would you mind explaing your metallics recipe a bit further? You got me intrigued here ;)

Wow, i'd be pleased with doing that in a few days, it's fantastic looking.
Can I ask what kind of airbrush you use? I've upgraded my cheap Chinese airbrush I use for priming and painting scenery bits to a neo for iwata this week, but I haven't tried it out yet.
I'd love to be able to do lighting effects like that.

Great! I love it. You said it took you 2.5h, sure? :)

I really like that blue glow emerging from the glasses

Thanks for your comments.

2/3 of the mini were done with the airbrush and the metallics are just washes and edge highlights so 2 1/2 hours are actually too much for my tastes.

For the metallics I use Vallejo air colours, followed by army painter inks (dark tone) and edge highlights going up to pure metallic medium. Then it´s selective glazing with green and purple inks. The rust is just thinned down brown and orange paint running along the recesses.

For the OSL I use a cheap airbrush with a 0.3 mm hose. I make sure that I don´t get spider webs and a 3mm wide circle with faded edges from 4-5cm away (practise on a piece of paper). Aim for the light source and give it 2-3 quick blasts. The light source should be opaque while the overspray covers the surrounding area. Reaaet this one or two times with lighter tones and try to cover less area. Then go back to the hairy sticks and use a bit of ink in the shadows and pure white for the light source and edges next to it.

Lovely paintjob indeed. The airbrush can really be a fast tool , but as good as the result is , I say don't rush too much , a bit more time can make even better miniatures! In the end this guys have been unpainted for almost 30 years, so the time proportions can be stretched ...
