Harry does HeroQuest

Harry

Baron
Soooo ... with the anniversary of HeroQuest last year I dug out the old set. Always loved HeroQuest.
Then at Oldhammer Day a very fine fellow indeed turned up with the most beautiful homemade HeroQuest set.
At the heart of this was a 3D board. It was quite something ... not made with Hirst art blocks ... this one was laser cut. It was somehow made by taking a photograph of the board and then clearly some sort of magic was involved .... :? (Perhaps it's maker will post on this thread and explain a little bit more about how such things are done).

Anyway ... I managed to get him to make another one and with the promise of a night of mad passion with my sister ... it was mine.

I had always fancied a 3D board but all that mucking about and expense with Hirst art blocks was more trouble than I could face ..... but this was ready to go ... it just needed a paint job.

... and here it is (Undercoated):

Those of you who know this board well will see that it is not quite a HeroQuest board .... very subtly different here and there and the key differences are that the squares a bit bigger ... perfect for a 25mm base and the corridor around the edge is a double square instead of a single ... (which are the two things I would have done to improve the HeroQuest board) ... oh, and the rooms are upside down. I can only guess this was done so that it is a NOT a HeroQuest board. (again I am sure its maker can elaborate).

I have spent a long time looking at it trying to decide exactly what i wanted to do with it. I was really keen to do it in the style of some of GW's old floor plans but much as I tried I just couldn't help myself .... I had to paint it as a Heroquest board.

However, I always found the original a bit .... Bright. So I just tried to paint it 'toned down' a bit...a bit more 'natural. So it is still a HeroQuest board just a bit 'softer' ... a bit 'quieter'.

Anyway I found myself with a weekend with not much on ... so in between family stuff ... Here is where I am after a two days painting ... still loads to do .... got to finish painting the corridors and then add all the 3D stones and bones and blood splatters etc that detail the original. I also have to finish the gold trim ... several highlights to go. i confess I am still not sure i have gone the right way with this. I keep thinking i should have stuck to the stone greys of the original board ... I just thought the gold might make it look a bit ...posh. :)

Here are some close ups of the rooms with the board on top ... so you can see the the slightly more 'toned down' effect I have gone for ... you will see my blue/greys are not quite so blue and my yellow/browns are not quite so yellow ... the red/browns not so red.

I like the toned down version you've gone for, it's definitely an improvement. What's with the metal Heroquest furniture I saw elsewhere?

Being the proud owner of a laser cutter I can tell you how this is done. There is a photo engraving package available that converts JPEG images into a format that can be used by laser cutters - these only work with vector software such as autocad or similar. If you have a scan of some thing (such as a heroquest board for example......) you can pull it into the software package and the package outputs it into a format that can be understood by the laser cutter, which then does it's stuff on the engrave setting.

Hope this helps

Perfect! Muted and toned down just a little, and without straying into gritty reboot territory. So good!

You had to go and paint it better than mine didn't you? ;) Haha. And the rooms are NOT upside down. Yes, the HQ border is on the other side on the original, but with this board the illustrations are designed to be where the cards sit and so need to be on the players' side, not the DM's. :)

Thanks very much fellas ... you are all too kind.

The metal heroquest furniture was a very lucky ebay find.
It would appear to be the prototypes for the Heroquest plastics. So I will have a unique set of Heroquest furniture to go with my board.

Yes that sounds about right.
There was a bit more magic in there to remove the shading and make the tweeks to the floor plans where rubble or bones crossed the lines must have gone on as well.

@ardyer. Have you got a sister? ;)

Incredible painting Harry, and I admire the perseverance that must have taken to see it through! Although I'm sure you're going to tell me you did the whole lot in two shakes ;)

Sorry about that.

I knew there would be a perfectly reasonable explanation.

Just so you get what we are talking about .... the picture panels (not yet painted) are exactly the right size for the cards decks .....

Well two days ....
The rooms were fun bit the black lining was a grind. Worth it in the end.

Well worth it! Back to mine then...

Yes I did quite a bit of copying and pasting slabs to eliminate a lot of the shading and obvious bits of bones etc. Hopefully I rotated and mixed up the slabs enough that they don't look too regular.

Thanks very much.
Now you know why I wanted those candle sticks.

I look forward to the furniture and other items you're going to lay out.
Your board looks a heck of alot better then the original.
I'll be sending a PM probably over the weekend Harry,Gc

Thanks. Yeah, I'm hoping my furniture will be an improvement too. I will be trying my best to scratch build some suitable bottoms for these rather than use the cardboard from the HQ box.
