G.R.O.G. presents an old fashioned game of Warhammer

Harry

Baron
As a boy we could not afford all the toys we would like but we would get together and put all the toys we had on the table and sort them out into a couple of sides ... Good guys and Bad guys .... we didn't worry too much about points ... it didn't matter if one side had more dragons than the other .... we just wanted to see what it would look like with everything we had got painted on the table.

Well the Gloucestershire Retro and Oldhammer Gamers (GROG) decided to do just this.

We took as many painted Empire, Bretonnian, Dwarf and Elf Minis that could form any kind of a unit as we could find and put them at one end of a table. We then took as many Orc and Goblin, Undead, Skaven and Nurgle guys as we could assemble ... and sensibly fit on the other end of the table ..... and we had at it for two solid days of Glorious oldhammer gaming.

My thanks to Paul, Chris and Ben for helping to re-create the fun fueled gaming experience of my youth.

I am a bit rubbish at the whole battle report thing .... but I have lots of nice pictures.

As ever Harry - a good looking game with nicely painted figures - who won?

Amazing, just the sort of inspirational and aspirational post I wanted to see to kick off the hobby year!

As ever .... Oldhammer was the winner.
In fact it was so Oldhammer ... I couldn't remember who won.
But I think .... the Dwarves after taking areal battering on the right flank somehow managed to rally and despite significant loses managed to hold out against Nurgle.
On the other Flank the skaven ran away at the first sign of trouble but more by luck than any kind of judgement the Undead (in fact one block of skellies) managed to make first the bretonnians and then the entire Empire contingent flee from the table.
But ultimately the High Elves, in the center .... despite the loss of a dragon to sniper like accuracy of my warmachines were simply two strong and too organised and despite two days of throwing everything (including Squigs from the squig lobber) that the undead and Orcs and Goblins combined could find .... we barely made a dent in their line. And so ... as always the will of men failed and the realms of men would have fallen but for the intervention of the older races The Good races won saved by the Dwarves heroic resilience and the Elves superior martial skills.

...Thank you for that.
That is exactly why I posted it.

This game was played because of this forum.
It was played with folks I met through this forum and with an approach promoted by this forum.
It is the kind of game I have aspired to all my life .... and finally have got around to because of this forum.

As in most endeavours in the human experience the difference between those who succeed in doing something and those who fail is that the ones who succeeded were determined to do so.

I had painted nearly nothing for 25 years ... until I decided I was going to get stuff painted ... Now (a few years later) I have a fabulous collection of minis.
Despite having dreamed of games like this since I was a child I have not played a game like this in all those years until I got together with some like minded fellows and we decided to do it.

I still don't have a full 2nd or 3rd edition army for any race and I don't know the Rules! ... Yet I now play four or five BIG games like this a year.... the only thing that has changed was meeting some fine fellows and the determination to do it.

Simply stunning and is a timely reminder of something that I'd like to achieve this year, namely my Nurgle army painted to a standard I'm proud of, with great scenery and some sort of narrative to help play a game with like minded opponents..

These photos have given me renewed vigour to make that a reality, hopefully before BOYL 2015. Thanks!

Thanks fellas.

Having seen your amazing painting and converting .... that will be sight to see.
Look forward to that.
All the best,
Harry
