Forces of Fantasy, Ravening Hordes AND THE JOURNALS

So as my grand plan of binding myself a matching set of all editions of Warhammer (since obviously the End Times have come, the world is shattered and anything past this point just isn't Warhammer anymore! ;) ) grows apace I am turning to supplements and wondering... Forces of Fantasy for First Edition and Ravening Hordes for Second. Worth having? Worth spending a fortune on? Worth... just what are they worth anyway- on ebay or anywhere? AND would it be too sacrilegious to slice them up and rebind them anyhow? Also, are the books the same size as the First and Second Ed rulebooks?

Re: Forces of Fantasy and Ravening Hordes

I like both of them but only Ravening Hordes is a pure original. I enjoy both of them but I would suggest having a read of Forces of Fantasy before shelling out for it. You can pick RH up for about £10 on ebay, I'm sure someone somewhere will sell you a less than perfect copy for less.

Re: Forces of Fantasy and Ravening Hordes

I'm really happy with my copy of Ravening Hordes, but I'm sure I paid more for it than the £10 Just John mentioned! Be prepared to wade through hundreds of listing for 6th edition Ravening hordes if you do use ebay to find it.

Rebinding it would probably be good if you plan on using it during a game and would help it to last anyway.

Re: Forces of Fantasy and Ravening Hordes

Forces of Fantasy books are the same size as 1st edition books.
Ravening Hordes is a few mm larger than the 2nd ed rulebooks, and doesn't fit in the 2nd edition box, the page layout and typography are totally different as well, so doesn't really match in style.

Content-wise, FoF is an odd beast, and so I love it best. It has some new creatures, magic items, rules clarifications as well as very loose army lists. Worth remembering that it was written before the setting was codified, and has a much wilder, slightly grimey swords and sorcery vibe to it than even 2nd Ed. has It also has some lovely b&w artwork, several outstanding small Blanche pieces, his zombie-ghost-child punk halfling standard bearer and drunken tramp-wizard. No idea what I paid for it. But if I had to I'd happily pay £20 for it tomorrow.

For rebinding, the internal gutter is about 1/4" so there isn't a lot of space for oversewing / library binding. The pagecount is 46 / 38 / 38 so would make very fat sections, so there's a bit of a challenge there!

Ravening hordes, apart from adding a few specialist troop types isn't really my cup of tea, it is much the same as 3rd Eds. Armies, telling you what consists each army in the Warhammer World, but without much in the way of background or supporting narrative.

Would you also be looking to include articles from the Compendiums/Journals?

Mind you 6th ed ravening hordes isn't a bad little book. The white army list supplement for 4th is quite nice too if you can find it.

Big recommend for 2nd ed ravening hordes.

For this alone £20 is worth it!

I'm halfway through the 3rd Ed rulebook, cutting the pages free and gluing an insert along the edges to compile them into gathers so I know it would be some work, I'm up for chunky volumes though, leather-bound of course!

I'd love to stick compendium/journal articles in, it just depends what I have to hand when I begin. What I'd really like would be some original pieces of artwork to slide into the mix as a surprise for the idle flicker!

No, I ran games of 6th ed without buying armies books for ages just using Ravening Hordes. An excellent little tome. :)

Re: Forces of Fantasy and Ravening Hordes

I absolutely love FOF - and don't forget the Book of Battalions that came with it.

I may have a spare of FOF in which case you can have it.

As soon as I get a bit farther I'll put it on the blog, it will be an ongoing project! :) At the moment I'm just gluing gathers and it's not interesting to see or write about!

The budget's tight this month- and for the next few months as I have a wedding to finance. As I say though, this is a long-standing project so it'll take me the next 6 months to get the rulebooks done probably.

On the same subject, how do the Journals measure up to 2nd/Ravening Hordes in pages size?

They're all A4ish. You'll be wanting the compendiums as well?

First Citadel Compendium (US) - 1st ed. wirebound
Second Citadel Compendium - 1st ed. wireboud
Citadel Journal Spring 1985 2nd ed. wirebound
Citadel Journal Autumn 1985 2nd ed perfect bound
Third Citadel Compendium 2nd ed wirebound
Citadel Journal Spring 1987 2nd ed perfect bound

And what about the scenario books for 2nd Ed, and the rules-sheet / flyers for 1st ed? it won't be complete without them

I've got a couple of compendiums or journals in a bad coverless state which might be suitable for re-binding if you're interested?

Ooh yeah...

My plan was to bind 1st and 2nd ed together, but the 1st ed/forces of fantasy books are so much shorter it's not going to work. So...

2nd Ed, Ravening Hordes, Compendiums and scenarios....

I'm hoping to have laid hands on Spring 86 and 87 and the Magnificent Sven, but if you've got bad condition ones obviously I'd rather rescue them than trash a perfect copy.

I am also missing the Book of Battalions from my FoF set. :(

Well, this is all I found. The flying monkeys must have taken the others to new masters.

The back cover, which is counters for the dolgan raiders scenario is in a similar state.

Any use?

Book of battalions is lying underneath the brown FoF. See viewtopic.php?f=15&t=169 for the thread itself
