First proper game of 3rd coming up, plus a few questions

Right-o on the 18th of next month me and Subedai are playing which will be my first ever full 3rd Ed game, I've had a few mini games with my Wife and mate before but that's it.

As far as Im aware we are using the Warhammer Armies lists (Undead in my case, O&G in his) and no GM at this point in time. So with that in mind is there anything i need to know before hand? Such as certain rules or foreseeable problems?

Also i have a few questions:

A unit champion costs the same cost as a normal trooper (Unless its a certain type), what befits does the Champion get? Does he allow the unit to make a Complex Manoeuvre?

How do you add a Standard and Musician to units?, is there an added cost? and what units can't stake them?

How many characters are recommend? is 1 per unit the norm?

I'm sure i'll have more questions and i make my way though the books :)

How do you add a Standard and Musician to units?,

I know you pay double points to add these to your regiment

page 83 WHFB 3rd edition.

may be something around there for champions

Nice the one i had version 1.2 by Alex Koning (Is that you?) which i downloaded from Scribd last night, Its helping alot. Just need to find someone nice enough to print me off a copy *cough* Subedai *Cough* hehe

Still have far too many questions to ask though lol

No worries, I'll bring you a copy. I might lay it out in an A5 booklet format, since I quite like the small rulebooks in the current WHF/W40k starter sets!

Now that's a great idea, a fan of the starter set rulebooks myself. Now if only they'd do the Codex's or Army books the same way

With regard to Undead remember how both Instability and Fear works. This isn't 6th+ edition so don't expect your Undead to sit there and take a beating for a number of rounds, they will fade away as a unit. They're not as easy to re-raise as in later editions so don't chuck them away thinking you'll be raising loads back each round. Spend 50% of your points on characters and don't go for less than two Necromancers. Zombies aren't worth using in 3rd imo because one push back and they bugger off for good. Always put characters in your chariots otherwise you're just wasting your points on chariots that will bounce off the units they charge and crumble due to instability with returned hits etc.

When it states that Undead Heros lvl 10 or higher has to take a magic item, does that include Vampires/Necro/Liches? Also trying to go for balance what lvl Vampire and equipment would you suggest?

Looking to include 2 units of 10 Death Riders, as the Zombie Horsemen figures are my favourite sculpts :) Then its unit Grim Reapers, 2 Skeleton units, a Screaming Skull catapult, a Chariot then if i have points a ghoul unit :)

NO GM??

Don't worry, get one of these:

Adds a nice random element to the battle, technically it's 2nd Edition, but then what isn't?

Banish the heathen! ;)

But it's true!  They're great in 2nd and 4th onwards but in third I'd rather have Ghouls than Zombies, even if they're twice the price and tend to stop for a snack, because once the enemy starts to lap around your Zombies they're gone.

The Plague Cart is worth adding as it'll boost your Instability rolls.

I've always assumed yes.

The cheesey vampire is lvl 25, chariot and a frost blade. People will rightly hit you over the head with the hardback rulebook if you field this. ;) I tend to not go beyond level 15 with any heroes unless it's a huge game. Vampires are a lot of points generally and they can only be in one place at one time so I prefer to field more Undead heroes. As a general rule I don't go beyond lvl 15 with any heros. I don't have the armies book to hand but for equipment it's all about hitting power. I.e. you've got your troops to soak up the hits but any hits your heros make need to count.

Yeah that's me, I changed it to Dreamfish (got scared GW would find out). Anyhow, consider the version on the forum as the most recent. I don't maintain other versions than the one on the forum. I think the new version contains some corrected typos and a correction to the TO HIT or TO WOUND table.

I've made an A5 booklet from your PDF that can be printed double sided and stapled. Once again thank you for putting this together, I think it'll make my first 3rd Edition battle in 20 years go a lot smoother!

If you want to download it, I have shared it here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rmhczu690fnkr ... -%20A5.pdf

Great idea, I'll add the download to the reference topic.

Subedai thanks for the offer on the Plague Cart, i'll let you know :)

I have a question, yup another one.. Is there much point having a Battle Standard Bearer in a Undead force? I take it Undead don't rout rather they roll on the instability table?

Yes it has. You gain +1 for combat resolution, thus less chance you have to roll for instability, and you can make a magic standard bearer out of it. Granted the bonus for the rally tests are a bit useless.
