ehuh.. sculpting lips

ManicMan

Lord
well.. while not the best, I'm getting fairly happy with a figure I've sculpted. I'm just waiting for a couple of bits to fully cure then I'm gonna make up a mould and cast a copy up. Not the best job in the world of course, and I know the hands are too big. I guess they are serviceable but too big.

but the one bit I'm kinda more upset (if that's the right word) about is the lips. At first, I tried to have the head without them and just have a bit of a little gap where the mouth was, like just a line where I slightly parted the mouth but that didn't look right. So I tried to do a tiny bit of lips..

I haven't got photos to show right now but.. at the moment, I'm getting flash backs to an episode of are you being served? where they have to use fake lips for a CPR practice dummy (think wax lips).. it just doesn't look right at all.. so it appears I'm kinda screwed both ways.. damned if I do, damned if I don't. As I put on the lips bit after it had set, it's much easier to take them off so I guess I could do a quick mold, case, and see what I think, depending if I want to remove them or not..

It's very nich but.. what the hell, anyone got advice or know of advice for things like sculpting lips? soo small yet I think the detail might matter.. Oh and the figure is female by the way, Not trying to say it's the case with all, but the lips are kinda meant to be noticeable. I would call this 'fan art sculpt' as well as practice.

sorry, no help here. the most i tried to do was hand, it it was very difficult and end-result was not good. I was also not using the best medium, Brown stuff instead of Green.
I think the pro's use Green, assuming it's epoxy and not wax?

yeah, I use green stuff. when I practice on most stuff, I use a mixture between Milliput and Green Stuff. well. I say mixture, you can mix and I do at times, but I often use the Milliput for anything that Is gonna be sanded and I want a machine like surface, OR to create the basic inner core, and then green stuff for anything that is more smooth and organic. Sometimes I do a mix of the two together but I've never quite got a happy mix of being able to sand it while still having the easier to work with elastic nature of green stuff.. but then, I'm not expert and I do have the odd bits which.. well, clearly didn't mix fully when I was mixing stuff.. but good enough.

of course, due to... certain USA situations, green stuff is now not made by the original creators but a new UK formula will be coming out. interesting to see what people think of that.

Lips are hard. I cut thd basic mouth in with a scalpel and pull slightly up when removing the blade to give the upper lip some flare. The lower lip is then pushed up against it before adding the chin. It's by no means totally satisfactory, especially with female mouths. My attempts to refine further usually end up with a mashed and useless lower face.
