Dwarf LOTR: WD rules/stats?

So I am starting a small Warband for Lord of the Rings (I'm feeling a bit Rankin Bass). It is going to be around 5-10 figures.
This is my warband leader:

So my question is, how would you flesh out the rest of the warband to fit with Gimli? Would you go Citadel, Marauder, slotta, pre-slotta, another company?

I am open to all suggestions at this point, and just looking for a really unique force. So any input would be appreciated.

I need about 3-4 more infantry, and 2-3 ranged.

Re: Dwarf LOTR: Need some advice

LOTR dwarves from the same era will give you infantry:

Plus there's Thorin and another Gimli

Not sure about missile troops though

Re: Dwarf LOTR: Need some advice

I would probably use other dwarves from that period by the Perrys look here and here - some archers, crossbows and a good mix of costume.

If I was going for a Rankin Bass Hobbit kind of troop and was thinking of doing some modelling. MAxxev did some lovely conversions of Night Goblins into gnomes.

If I were going to do something that followed Tolkien then I'd have them as Book of Lost Tales dwarves and mix them with some LoTR orcs...

Re: Dwarf LOTR: Need some advice

Norse dwarves would work fine for missiles, there are a few armed with bows for the LOTR look.

So I have the rest of my warband on the way. I really appreciate everyone's advice.

I was pondering, and as it was a bit before my time, if there were any Rules or stats ever posted for the Citadel ME33 LOTR range?

Didn't know if that would have been something to grace the pages of earlier White Dwarfs?

They didn't support it with any rules. Games Workshop did publish their version of Middle Earth Role Playing around that time.

It is quite rules-heavy for an RPG, so probably not what you're looking for in terms of skirmish / warband rules, and the profiles for named characters are spread throughout a few supplement (Lords of middle Earth series IIRC)

The Lidless Eye, collection of army lists for WRG 6th:

John Treadaway makes an intereting note that GW had approached him as one of the authors of the Lidless Eye to convert LoTR for Warhammer http://www.salute.co.uk/archive/warlords/rules_lidless_eye.htm ... so it might be possible to reconstruct what might have been.

Otherwise 2nd Edition Warhammer, you can do anything with 2nd Edition.

Oh yes, and there's Minas Tirith in WD53 - before the ME Range, for 1st Ed Warhammer. The only dwarf stats are for Gimil.

Peter Brown at Life in Miniature has posted about SELWG's Middle Earth Wargames Rules here:

http://life-in-miniature.blogspot.co.uk ... earth.html

And there's a link to the ruleset on Scribd at the end of the post. Would be interested in trying out some of these old rules sets. (I actually have a copy of the Middle Earth Role Playing book that Zhu mentions, I don't have it to hand at the moment but yeah, from what I recall it would be somewhat unwieldy to adapt for skirmish or battle use. Could take another look when I'm back up in Liverpool if you're interested though.)

Cool thanks guys. So I will probably just make up my own stuff, and smash it together with RoC.

Or my gaming group will jsut make me use the current rules.....boo, hiss!

Yeah, MERP is rolemaster-lite, but still too heavy for skirmish IMHO - working out movement penalties for readying weapons? Could work, but seems a bit too crunchy in the wrong places for tabletop use.

Also had a quick read of some reviews of The One Ring, mostly because it's pretty...

Combat is quite abstract, more dependant on stances of characters rather than locations relative to each other. Reminds me of the old War in Middle Earth computer game (Mike Singleton of Lords of Midnight fame).

I have all three,

MERP is not that heavy really charecter creation is about as hard as it gets but there are many better systems and I've always felt it lacked in Middle Earthness.

Rolemaster? Run away, run away now.

The One Ring, looks nice, tries quite well to capture the spirit if the hobbit but is very restrictive as to charecter creation. It is a story first rpg.

No reason not to use basic 2nd or 3rd ed WH.
