Dragons Monthly

Friends, I have a confession.

Much as the great dragons of myth hoard great piles of treasure, to gloat over, roll around in and generally keep for themselves, I too am guilty, of the same conceit no less - for I am a hoarder of great dragons of myth, and I have a pile of them that I gloat over, roll around in and generally keep to myself (and away from the wife, so that Questions Won't Be Asked).

I'm not using hyperbole here (though I did have to use google to spell 'hyperbole'). It's a literal pile. There are so many dragons in it i've lost count. There are Citadel dragons, Ral Partha dragons, Grenadier dragons, Marauder dragons, there are Bob Olley dragons, Tom Meier dragons, Nick Bibby dragons, Trish Morrison dragons, there are old dragons, new dragons, metal dragons, plastic dragons, half dragons, forest dragons, duelling dragons, zombie dragons, hoarding dragons, Krynn dragons, there's even a dragon that noone can identify... enough is enough.

The purpose of this post is shame. I'm shaming myself into doing something about my dragon piles. I recently bought several more from Ironwind Metals, who stock a lot of old Ral Partha and Citadel dragons, and a Marauder High Elf Lord on Dragon arrived from dear Mr Magos the other morning - too many dragons! I'm going to make an effort to do one a month, starting now. With something small. Like maybe a Tom Meier... those are pretty small. Get me into the swing.

In the meantime, I want you all to heap shame upon me until I produce pics of finished product! I'm off now to undercoat a dragon. See y'all soon...

How dare you treat those poor dragons like this! Come on, no sleep until the first one look decent!
(Hope that was enough shame to motivate you ;) )

You are a good fellow, I've spent a good part of my afternoon pinning, glueing and filling a Tom Meier blue dragon and a Nick Bibby 'Dragon Masters' dragon to get me started. The blue one will be first, as it is small and blue, but I don't know what colour scheme to use on the Dragon Master - any ideas my good friends?

(Also, my wife caught me taking pics of the dragon pile, and so now Questions are Being Asked)

Dude, remind me what we're playing right now? Oh yes right, Dungeon and DRAGONS... (note the plural)
Now get painting, you know there is no choice ;)

The back scales are quite an important part of this model and I think it needs to contrast with the skin. I would probably go for bone colored scales on a dark green or dark red skin.

Re: Here be Dragons...

Well I made a solid effort the last couple of nights, but the 'March' dragon isn't quite finished in time...

I'll finish the rest of it soon and update the thread. In other news, I kinda, maybe, sorta bought two more dragons today

Re: Here be Dragons...

Here's a solution for you Cap't'n, just bash 'em up together to make one super big giant dragon of chaos with 12 heads; 37 wings and a 3 yard long body...

...or just paint them as good as this one taking your time ;)

Re: Here be Dragons...

So your "painting dragon exercise" is already in deficit...
Yeah I know that feeling too ;)
But still it is good to see progress, excellent job on the head!

I haven't finished (or started) basing March's dragon, but I made good progress on April. I decided to honour Nick Bibby's enthusiasm for making 'realistic' looking dragons by giving this Dragon Master dragon a 'realistic' colour scheme. Inspired by the desert dwelling zebra-tailed lizard from America's southwest and the winged lizards of order 'draco', I came up with this scheme. What do you guys think?

Re: Here be Dragons...

Very well done, I'm not sure I would do that on one of my own (non existent) dragons, but it's very well done...I'm a bit less imaginative I guess

It is brilliant ! I love this one a lot !
The way you treated the bright parts looks oldschool but with the realistic approach it really takes a life of its own. It really looks like it comes out of a Frazetta drawing and with Nick's realistic approach too it is a perfect fit. Give him a desert base and it's a killer !
God, you make me want to paint dragons now...

Re: Here be Dragons...

That's rather tasty, I'd wouldn't have gone Zebra tail though as it clashes too much for my grimy tastes. But nontheless a stunning job.

It's a little bit late, but chaps, I give you...

The March Dragon

This is a sculpt by my favorite, Tom Meier. His style has a strong fairy-tale quality, with an emphasis on realistic proportion and scale, which are two things difficult to marry. This dragon was painted in a traditional sort of scheme, with a base of very dark purple treated with the old citadel blue wash that leaves an irridescent sheen. I used several layers of gentle highlights on the scales, using the old 'Enchanted Blue' as a basis for my colors. The chest scales are my new favorite colour from the new paint range: Averland Sunset. This was washed with old Flesh Wash and then gradually highlighted back through Averland to a bone colour. The base is a simple combination of chunky rocks to bring the surface level up to the solid moulded base, then sprinkled with model bark to get a thick loamy texture, sprinkled with dull green flock for a mossy feel and decorated with autumn leaves from Secret Weapon.

Re: Here be Dragons...

Yeah man, that's really nice.

I'm also a big fan of averland sunset (formerly known as iyanden darksun, I believe)...makes painting yellow so much easier :ugeek:
