DM's Dark Elf Army

1.png

This is the first army I've actually finished (converted, painted and based) in over 20 years. Usually with these things I get bored, veer off onto other projects and leave things unfinished, and over more recent years I've tended to prefer to work on small, skirmish level forces. However, having just lost my job at Foundry (My advice: Don't trust a word they say), I was determined to actually get something productive done and actually finish a damn army for once. Though I doubt the people at the Job Centre would class this as productive...

So, anyway, on to the army. I've not gone and given them any character names yet, or worked out exact points values, but there's around 3,000 points or so, from a rough calculation.

Army Leader (Matching foot and mounted models)

Wizard on Cold one

3.png

Wizard, with 2 bodyguards - This was actually the first figure I painted for the entire army, hence the different base. I never intended to make an army, just liked the model, so painted it, and then started buying more on eBay. The bodyguards are 80's LotR Deep Elves.

5.png

Wizard - Seems to lack much in the way of facial details, but, as with a lot of these old figures, the moulds must have been used until they fell apart. As they're not worth much, I doubt it's a recast.

6.png

Standard Bearer on Temple Dog - This is a conversion of a foot model, but I love the Temple Dog model, and just modified it slightly so it's rearing up on it's rear legs.

8.png

Assassin - This is actually the old Wood Elf Boar handler, but I really liked the model. Incidentally, it was this exact model that was inked and used in photography for one of the early 90's Citadel catalogues. It's been sat around in my collection for that long!

18.png

5 Helldrakes - Old figures, using newer Lizardmen shields.

19.png

8 Doomdrakes - Pretty straightforward, but the centre two figures are infantry conversions.

16.png

10 Doomsteeds - Mainly Melnibonean cavalry, led by a Dragon Master, with a few High Elves mixed in as I couldn't get any more of the Cavalry. If anyone's got any let me know.

17.png

5 Dark Riders - More Melniboneans. I love these models, and could do with some more.

2.png

10 Shadows - Marauder Scouts. Again, I just love the faces on these models.

14.png

20 Crossbowmen - The last unit to be finished, with only a couple of model variants. Not great models, but they look ok ranked up.

12.png

Mengil Manhide's Manflayers - 16 Warriors - More classic Citadel models, I love the facial expression on Mengil. The Shields are Foundry, and look like stretched skin, so they work quite well.

13.png

15.png

25 Warriors - These are Marauder models, and though I like them, they're possibly some of the worst figures in the history of Citadel Miniatures for ranking up together.

9.png

10 Witch Elves - These are the earlier Marauder versions, rather than the later ones that look like drag queens.

10.png

1 Whelp Master with 5 Chaos Hounds - Quite pleased with how these turned out, in particular the 'skinned' dog, that I used the new GW technical blood paint on, it worked really well.

11.png

1 Whelp Master with Hydra - Another Marauder model, and the only female model with it's tits out, which I did for the sheer hell of it.

20.png

3 Repeating Bolt Throwers - Fitted to custom bases, so the figures can be removed if needed.

So, there you have it, possibly my largest project to date. Not sure what to move on to now, possibly my Horus Heresy Death Guard.

Now, anyone got any jobs going?

Rather tasty Dark Elves you have there bud, they are a joy to paint.

And Ardyer I have 2 Temple dogs but no riders :( Sadness.

Very impressive. I'm always horribly envious of people who actually get a full army painted up. Really like the combination of models from different eras.

And nice to know that even with 'new management' Foundry are still [insert Frotherism of choice here]. ;)

Lovely army you have there! + congrats on actually finishing one. I plan to paint a Nurgle Daemon army over the next few years and I'll be happy if it comes out to that quality.

The Maruader Dark Elves have never been bettered IMHO. Looks great all ranked up together in that army shot!

Cheers all! Sadly I don't have a suitable table to sit behind, or I'd do the cheesy Warhammer Armies pose photo.

Ever though I've classed it as completed, I've actually still got a Cold One chariot, a war altar and the baggage trains to finish, but I think I'm going to have a break from Dark Elves and do something different for a bit!

Great job. The cavalry are my favourite element of the force but they all look good, particularly massed together.

I am surprised the templedog squeezed onto a cavalry base. Thats a chunky model.

It's a pleasure to see a nicely- and fully- painted force like that. A lot of the sculpts hold up well still - I have a few of those too.

Looking good! And apparently, I'm the only one on this forum without a temple dog!

I don't have one either, but would love to remedy that!

Tremendous looking army. I confess that the early dark elves leave me a bit cold, but your army has a great presence. The nice colour choices & subtle conversions really make it stand out.

Nice work!

Lovely looking army there! I'm using High Elf chainmail barded cavalry for my Doom Steeds and the Melnibonean as my Dark Riders. I don't have a temple dog yet. :(

I'm not usually a fan of the Dark Elf range of minis, but yours have changed my mind. They look great, I'm especially drawn to the Wizard and the Whelp Master's dogs, the flayed one is an idea I may steal....

Will you be making movement trays for the army?

Oh and congratulations on having a completed army, how does that feel? (I'm well envious!)

Already made the movement trays, just not painted up yet.

Having a completed army is somewhat of a novelty, It's not happened since about 1991.

It's somewhat tempered by the lack of anywhere to currently use them, though, so back on the shelf they go.
