Death to the Dire Crab! (A WFB 2nd Battle Report)

Con-fusion invited me to his lovely house for a game of WFB 2nd yesterday. Neither of us had ever played before, so he wrote a simple scenario for us to try out the rules. I apologize for the lack of pictures!

But first, I wanted to thank Con-fusion for graciously inviting me to his home and putting up with my constant lack of attention due to all the cool models he has. It even became something of a running joke while I was there, I behaved like a kid in a candy store, and I couldn’t help myself

The battle was fought on a 4x4 realm of battle board with hills in each corner and 3 pools in the center of the table. The pools could be searched for the fabled “shell-crusher,” a magic weapon previously wielded by a slain crab hunter. If a model at the edge of the pool rolled a 6 in their reserve phase, they found it. The pools were guarded by a blue dire crab. I took 6 dark elves with hand weapon and shield and 4 dark elf crossbowmen. The models were each treated as individuals and not units. This report is from my memory, so somethings may be out of order or inaccurate.

Also, because this was our first game of 2nd ed., if anyone sees anything we did wrong, feel free to let us know!

Turn 1:
The dark elves deployed on the southern end of the table, with the hand weapon elves in the valley and the crossbowmen on the right hill. The crab was hunkered down in-between the pools. The hand weapon dark elves advanced towards the pools while the crossbowmen unleashed their bolts on the crab, but between being at long range and the crab being in hard cover, failed to do anything. In their reserve phase, the crossbowmen moved down from the hill and the hand weapon elves moved forward again.

Then, as a blue bolt of lighting, the dire crab flung himself on the hand weapon elves. Five elves had to take terror checks, 4 passed! The one who didn’t was also the one charged. But his initiative was higher, so he swung first. Needed sixes to hit, he missed completely and was cut in half by the giant dire crab’s pincers.

Turn 2:
Four of the remaining hand weapon elves moved towards the pools, while one moved to heroically block a charge of the crossbowmen. Then the crossbowmen opened fire. This time, being in close range, the wounded the fell beast twice! In the reserve phase, two elves reached a pool and two more got closer to another pool.

The dire crab decided to go after the elves approaching the pools, somehow knowing that they were after the sword that could spell its doom. He charged an elf, who also failed to wound him, and disemboweled the elf in short order.

Turn 3:
A third elf reached a pool and the elf who had intended to block the charge moved towards the same pool herself. The crossbowmen opened fire again, further wounding the crab. The two elves already at a pool searched for shell crusher in vain.

The crab struck again, this time at one of the elves who failed to find anything. The elf passed his fear check (which we realized we forgot to make on the previous combat). But failed to hurt the walking tank. He paid for that failure with his life.

Turn 4:
The last hand weapon elf not at a pool closed in on one to search. Then the crossbowmen fired again, wounding the crab. So far, they had been the only ones capable of hurting the monster. In the reserve phase, they moved forward and three elves searched the pools, but to no avail.

Again, the dire crab flung himself on a hapless elf. While not fearing the beast, he failed to harm it before it gutted him stem to stern.

Turn 5:
One elf left his pool to get further away from the dire crab, while another elf moved towards a pool as well. Again the crossbowmen wounded the crab. Still, no one found the weapon.

And like lighting, another elf died at the hands of the crab, valiantly standing his ground from the fearsome creature to die an honorable (but very painful) death.

Turn 6:
Finally, the last elf reached a pool while the elf that had attempted to get some distance realized his fate and set a pick for the other elf. Again, the crossbowmen unleashed their bolts, wounding the crab beast.

For all his bravery to save his companion (how un-dark elf like!), the elf died like the others at the hands of crab.

Turn 7:
The crossbowmen shot the beast, again wounding him. But they were starting to wonder if this beast could be killed! But, as the last hand weapon elf frantically searched the pool, her hand grasped the handle of a weapon. She had found it! And just in time as the dire crab was eyeing her maliciously.

The fell beast must have known what she found, for he darted towards her. Emboldened by her discovery she conquered her fear and swung at the monster, but missed! She would pay for her failure with her life.

Turn 8:
The crossbowmen were all that was left, and they opened fire. They thought they had wounded the beast, but its chitinous armor saved him.

Now, the dire crab could concentrate on the elves that had actually wounded him. He charged an elf. But the elf conquered his terror and fear, held firm and fired off a bolt at the charging crab. He could not believe, the bolt pierced the crabs thick skull and it skidded to a stop in front of him, never to rise again!

Nice to see 2 valuable oldhammerers as you gather for a slice of game!

That seems like a fun game was had.Did you guys struggle with the rules or was it gamers' heaven? (I'm unfamiliar with 2nd to my great shame).

Some pics would have been appreciated but there's a return match right?

Second seemed pretty simple, but we did have to search for a few things. That said, we lacked magic and regiments, which might have added complexity.

After the game we spent a good while discussing how to turn this into a multi player scenario for the US oldhammer day. But, I don't know if there will be a rematch.

Yeah, sounds like a fun little scenario.

Never played 2nd ed, but I suppose it's pretty damn close to 3rd, just without so much fluff?

Good report too :)

Cheers

Con-fusion, who read the rules, referred to our as "third edition without the bloat."
