collectors, gamers, basement-dwellers?

why do you do with your minis? collectors and gamers

  • gamer, minis in foam-pluck cases

  • collector, display only

  • both, lean to gaming

  • both, mostly collecting/displaying

  • I'm not sure, i just buy them when i'm sad, depressed & feeling hopeless for the future of humanity

i was surprised about a year ago in a discussion on a different forum when someone talked about how much they hate metal models and how plastic was the best thing since sliced bread. i was shocked, like " whatyu talking about Wylis?"
The poster replied, "i want to apply some paint as quickly as possible and get my minis on the game table, not mess around with epoxy , drill-bits, files, or even primer etc."
until then it never crossed my mind that people bought these things just for games, i mean we had our prized minis back in the day we would put down on the table to represent our character on a dungeon map, but not speed-painted armies.

So I'm curious, what percent of people here collect and paint , then put them in a glass case like me? Versus the war-gaming aspect. i always wondered this in my regular forum, but they don't have a poll option there.

thx

I collect to paint them for fun and indulge in gaming with them from time to time. I'd do more gaming with them if the kids were interested, but they have largely lost interest so it's mostly theorycrafting with the occasional solo narrative scenario played for the story or to get an idea out of my head.

I am still exploring alternative rulesets to RT/2E in an effort to find some combination that works for me, particularly with campaign progression.

I enjoy collecting and painting, I can do that by myself. I do enjoy playing games, but not so much that I will seek out games clubs etc. to play at, I find I don't enjoy the company of many people in those situations. Luckily I have a bunch of lovely people to play occasional games with.

I like to world build.
I am making a village in Stirland and using models to represent it.
I am telling the story of the place though, so no armies vs armies in different places.
It is all set in and around the village.

The terrain and scenery and miniatures are kept in glass cabinets for prettiness and I play with them, but I play with them at my house so they do not need to be transported.
(But I do have some foam trays just incase)

Similar, the local club mostly play boardgames which I like, but I can play those at home.
Plus no-one really likes oldhammer and have a tendency to flit from new game to newer game.
But it has enabled me to meet people, one of whom I am trying to win over to oldhammer style games.

I did not vote as I am as much about gaming and collecting, no real leaning either way.
I do not enjoy painting people, but I love making and painting terrain.
I also love world building and creating stories around what I have made/painted.
To me the obvious thing to do with what I have made is to act out stories/games.

I prime my Plastic.. Alot of my Metal are one piece.. you need to file and clean up the plastics in most games.. the raise in pre-glued plastics when they are multi-piece made the painting harder in my view, though that glue is often pretty weak so easy to deal with.

sounds like the kinda person that buys them pre-painted plastics.. don't understand them myself. if you want pre-painted, atleast get a really hard/tricky to do model..

Humanity has a future? humanity isn't anywhere near a united group to have such thing... I would have to vote for multiply options.

interesting, sounds like there's even more asects to this hobby than what i thought?

this sounds like the dioramas i build, but not really. when you guys say theorycrafting/world-building, you mean the figures are loose and can be moved around the scene right? My scenes are fixed, and while they tell a story they're really purely for display, which i guess is limited once it's done but then there's always more stories to tell.
i played D&D with my kids at age 15-16ish, it was wonderful, but they only care aboiut video games now. I think it's what really killed hobby modeling too which really took off in the 70's. I built the Revell Santa Maria sailing ship and took it school in the 4th grade. 1977'ish

the big deal about Reaper " Bones" was supposedly a good scrub with soapy water and then you can apply acrylic right to the plastic. AAMF, if you use rattle can primer they get very sticky/tacky. I bought a limited amount, learned to paint on them, but quickly realized i didn't care for them and they are quite poor quality. Sold them on ebay for what i bought them for
i can see the apeal for gaming though, you can practically throw these things and they bounce . Metal is so fragile, it's all i can do to prevent damage even while building/painting them.

ok i dunno, i think we have one, maybe scrabbling around looking for scrap in a nuclear waste land, but it's still a future ;) Or, we'll get off this planet and then get contacted by the Federation, you never know

Hmm. Until recently I had all my minis on bookshelfs, but space considerations have just led to them being box-filed - pretty much doubling my available storage.
I'm not much a painter, so them being on 'display' was really about ease of access for gaming more than anything - but even un/partially painted, a shelf full of minis looks awesome to me.
I'm managing to get pretty regular games in, even if sometimes it's using Saga and proxying in eg Elves and Gobbos or what have you, but I'd say at least one game of WFB a month on top of the odd Saga evening.
Oh, and yeah, I'm not one for clubs - tried it, didn't gel. A bit hard to get established when everyone is already organised into games and campaigns, and they were not necessarily the most outwardly focused folks when it came to engaging with new people - pleasant enough though.

Not dioramas.
I play WFB 3rd edition but the games are set in a village with lots of details.
The villagers all have backgrounds, there is a history to each building.
Posters on walls have a reason for being there.
I use normal rules but the games are small, currently very small as I am still making it all, and the games are recorded and the outcome of the game determines how the world grows.

These links may help?

There is the blog with ramblings and WIPs:

And my website that has only finished articles:

I have only been doing it on and off for less than a year so there is plenty of work yet to do.

I am creating a world in my head and then creating it with models and then using those models to play and the outcome will help shape the development of it.
