Chaos Squat Warband

So I've been building up my Squats and Chaos Squats to build a Warband, this is just for my personal enjoyment and won't see many a game.

I've also been playing around using press molding to make Arms/Torsos/Heads, pretty much anything I needed I tried to make. Anyway here are my first 4 painted (They are multi-part Milliput copies and only for my personal use).

I just checked the blog

can you make small holes in the first half of the mold? It should Mae it easier to get it to line up later.

green stuff is also better than milliput. I think you can brush in sone veg. oil to help reduce stick.

A bold undertaking Mr Chico!

Thought Id mention with a bit of trimming down the bulk around the shoulder end and a little shortening I find the arms from the current plastic Dwarfs fit very well onto old Squat bodies.

I square off the mold edges so I have straight lines to match up (Instant mold can be reused so repressed together so no damage) I'm waiting for some Green Stuff to turn up and i'll be using that from now on. The main problem is that the cast has to dry in the molds but once cured nothing sticks to the instant mold so no need for oil

I think it's called a key

put a bead or just poke a few holes in one side and when you make the second half it will line up perfectly later.

how do you find the instamold? Is it worth the effort?

The Instant mold is great, being reusable Is a big boon and is rather cheap. Down side is having to use boiling water when you want to make new molds.

The casts always come out slightly larger and alot of flash but as I said I'm switching to Green stuff so it should reduce both of those problems and improve casting rate.

Just curious, but why not use resin? It seems like less work than trying to achieve the same result with oyumaru.

resin is kinda a pain compared to green stuff

plus it's easy to get bubbles in resin if you don't know what your doing

Because the start up cost for resin casting is alot more expensive (And more wastage) and I simply can't afford it heh, plus I'm only making 1 or 2 copies of each bit so the rubber casts are wasted (Instant Mold is reusable each time I want too cast something new). Not to mention it also it takes more time with resin casting to not only make the rubber molds but too mix everything up and get the mold right.

They look cool Chico (from what I can tell from your pinhole camera shots ;) ).

For casting it sounds like you have a decent enough set up for green stuff casting. Personally I use Siligum and cast in lead alloy rather than go the resin route. Casting this way means that I can replicate a part with high fidelity in the space of 20 minutes - it is relatively costly to do this as you need Silligum (About £25 for 300g) and casting quality lead (I recommend bulk quantities of: http://shop.princeaugust.ie/casting-metals/model-metal/ . Also a pan to melt the lead is required!

I have a quick article about the Siligum on me blog if you are interested:

I given up on push castings for the time being, time and effort combined with a large wastage rate meant it wasn't worth it to sustain in the long run. I learnt a fair chuck from it though, so if i ever start it back up I'll know what not to do.

Well, you've gained a new follower !
I do like Siligum a lot and I've only used it with resin so far, I'm surprised to see you chose lead for casting bases, I would have DURO or silgum with the below part in open air to make resin pouring easy but your method works great.

Woot!

The lead is expensive but has the benefit of being really really heavy and this is great for the "blow away in a high wind" epic plastic tanks. For resin pouring I think your method of open air pouring is more efficient. I would be inclined to avoid doing open air pouring with lead as the lead cools very quickly and in a convex shape consequently it would be difficult to get it flat on the base.

Chico, if there are any specific parts you need replicated for the (Chaos) Squats in future I am sure I could help you out.

Arms and Lasguns would be a boon if you could help with the casting/replicating at somepoint, I just need to need hold of a complete sprue of the originals first and of course the metal Exo Armour arms.

Arms and Lasguns are easy peasy. I assume you are talking about the original RT lasgun that looks like a piece of pipe?

I was planning to do some of those bits anyway for my own squats and RT guardsmen. I think I have most of the squat arms sprue in a bitz bag. Probably only need to do 2-4 arms anyway.

What is your exo-armour situation exactly. I don't own any of those. Did you end up with a body with no arms or some such?
