Chaos Dwarves for my 40k warband

I wrote a little bit that got published on Realm of Chaos 80s recently about my Tzeench warband.
http://realmofchaos80s.blogspot.co.uk/2 ... rband.html

The last time my champion got a reward his roll on the followers table resulted in 5 chaos dwarves. We were playing 40k RT so were allowed to sell our equipment and buy new stuff. The dwarves came with enough equipment combined with my stash to change up for a shield, mesh and flack (3+ save in total as armour stacks in RT), a jump pack and a bolt pistol each. They also got eye protectors in my warband wide defense against the power of blind grenades!

Im going to paint them in a similar way to the rest of my warband. That is with really awful cheap paints! I will also be eschewing the use of brushes in favour of sponges instead (although I will still do SOME brush work!).

Anyway, here is a photo of the models glued and ready. THey are from my current Kick Starter
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/17 ... unter-crew
and will be available through my store once the KS is fulfilled. The middle one is a bit of a conversion, a head swap from another of the KS model, plus some pads from my metal bike gang. The end one is a bit blacky as the boy got ahold of him and some black paint....

They look fantastic! And I really enjoyed reading the article about your warband, the way it was created and the work you put into it with those cheap paints. Impressive job.

Nice. Your paint jobs have an atmospheric, theatrical look that I really like. Lots of contrast between shadows and light appeals to me in miniatures too.
I am looking forward to watching the step by step process.

Next pass was the pink. I tried again with the sponges, but it didnt really work as the paint did not go into the recesses enough so I used a brush, a big one. I painted the paint on as a "glaze", that is a thin even coat that stains the under layers without building up in the recesses.

I had to tweak the clour blance with this image, as the photograph did not show the pink as bright as it is in real life. WHile the paint is thin and pigment-poor, the actual vibrancy of it is amazing!

I used an old bath sponge, any sponge will do, I guess.

Next will be a blue sponge-ing.

I've been painting and modeeling for more than 20 years now but I had never come by the Zenithal sponging technique before I have to say. It does look good and I can see many good uses for it. I'm really liking the result so far. Do you intend on using washes to make contrast or not ?

Really interesting effect, that entire warband is really awesome.

Also those squats on your kickstarter is really great. Especially the fact that you made some captives, i was looking for some suitable slave-models for a slightly "Logans world-inspired" rt setting

/Edit, and now i'm backing this kickstarter. Really nice squats, full of character

Next layer was some white sponged over. The image above makes the blue look quite even, but it was showing the pink through on the edges. I layered over some white with the sponge again. I will do blue over the top and build it to a nice rich saturation.

I should point out that I am using Vallejo white, not cruddy low quality white. This is just to take the pain out of the process, as the cruddy white will give the same effect, but you have to do about 5 layers!

I will be doing some more blue sponged on, then some white highlights. After that I will brush in some contrast with dark blue. Finally it will be details and finishing touches, followed by basing.

I'm a bit slow, but I only just realised that was your warband on Orlyggs' blog

It all looks ace, but the stand out for me is your "scratch built troll", how the hell did you scratch build such an awesome looking mini?

Also -as I commented a few weeks back on another topic- I'm a fan of the rust effects on your minis. I just finished reading your tutorial on your website. Very informative, cheers :)

Lastly, just out of curiosity, have you used this posts painting technique on any other minis? Or is it something new you just wanted to try?

Great work Curtis .

THanks optimus.

THe troll was just for fun. I make my living sculpting and casting models, so Im a professional! 8-) I am always up for commissions. Maybe we should run some kickstarters through this forum to get some models made?

As for the painting guide here, I have not used "sponged on zenithal highlighting" before, but the rest of the warband was done with the same style, just dry-brushing instead of sponged on paint. Im doing it for 2 reasons. Firstly, to promote my new post-apoc dwarves (the kickstarter has just ended but they will be available soon enough in the shop). Secondly, these are the latest additions to my warband and so I thought it would be fun to go through my painting technique. I got quite a bit of positive feedback about the warband so far and just want to add some content to this forum.

And so to the next layer. This was a white higlight done with the sponge. I will be doing some shading on the next pass, but will probably touch up some areas with the pink and blue where the white is too strong first.

Yes please...

Let me see the Troll please. I can't locate it and now I am curious.

Also these dwarfs look awesome. I prefer the one without helmet, the others look small headed, but still great.

How much does a commission cost anyway?

Here is the troll. The wooden weapon is a bit of wood. He also has a grafted on frenzon dispensor on his back, but I didnt get a good photo of it. He has bat head and flaming skull fac emutations, so I tried to paint some lighting effects. Didnt turn out as well as I hoped, but what the hey, still looks fine!

As for commissions, I charge £100 for a figure. However, I think the thing to do would be to either do some oldhammer figures as a kickstarter or as pre-order, dunno. The problem is risk, I dont want to sculpt something Im not massively enthusiastic about and then make no money from it, if you see what I mean. Im happy to not make money on stuff I want to do for myself OR make money on other peoples ideas. ;)

I completely understand. I do have some ideas, I will mail you later when I have thought it through.

Troll looks great too btw.
