Camo Marine RT - p.172

On page 172 of the Rogue Trader rulebook, we see an amazing illustration of a camouflaged Ultramarine stalking the mercenary, Worldburner. I've always adored this depiction... has anyone ever tried to replicate this camo paint scheme on a mini? What colors would you suggest? How might you paint the camo stripes? Have you ever seen a picture where someone has tried this and if so, can you point me in the right direction? Really looking forward to your responses! I'm looking to do up a squad in this style and I need some inspiration!

Cheers!

depends on what colour you want to use as the base for the Ultramarines, i would have gone with Ultramarine blue, with a darker blue for the striping (funny that it's 'camouflaged' as blue, in a planet with green plants, so completely useless). Thin brush for the detailing or cheat a bit with thin paint pens

I've had a brainstorm and I'm considering a dark blue basecoat with a zenithal highlight of two shades of blue... and then mapping off the areas on the armor with small strips of blue tac, arranged in the vine-like patterns we see in the pic (sort of like the way Eddie Van Halen painted his famous guitars with spray and masking tape) and then pulling it all off after spray. I'm wondering if there might be a better suggestion than blue tac? Has anyone tried something like this?

blue tac won't give clean edges.. using a painters tape might be a bit better, but then, it's small details.

I’d be tempted to experiment with liquid masking fluid over a base coat of the darker colour before spraying with the lighter one.

i was going to suggest masking fluid, although i have never used it. though, quite honestly, i don't think masking such small areas will be any easier than just free-handing squiggly lines.

Thank you for the replies, everyone! Masking fluid, that sounds like it might be worth a try, using a very small brush. I love the idea of peeling away those stripes, it will definitely give the mini a more enigmatic look as opposed to direct paint.
I initially thought something with the consistency of mixed green stuff, but that adheres a little too strongly and would probably pull the paint off. Could anyone suggest a putty that wouldn't be too oily or form too strong of a bond?

You could try masking tape. But low tack, like one for airbrush illustrations. Also any other tape just tack it many times so it lose glue.

Not sure for masking fluid as it's very liquid and could start flowing. Also it could tear paint of. Didn't have other experience except on paper or very smooth bristol board. Did tear the paper few times.

Camo stripes could be drawn with fine liners or free hand with brush. You can always correct it after.

I think there is photo of old marines with that blue camo?

Nice minis on the page.

Was thinking of WD or similar but found in RT book and few adverts ( from SOL site )! Never knew that old WD got any advert, was thinking that was reserved for red era hehe

Thank you so much again, folks. I absolutely adore the paint jobs in those pics, they remind me of everything cool about the RT days and the artists did an excellent representation of the original. I've used them as inspiration and have hit the ground running with Vallejo Masking Fluid - it's awesome. Will be doing all my camo patterns with it from now on. Here's an early stage shot of one of the squads
