C100 Marine "Bolters"?

Any idea if C100 Space Marine Bolters were always Bolters or if they were some kind of other weapons when they were designed? I have a hunch they are Melta Guns. Does anyone know anyone in the know who could confirm/deny?

They always struck me as laser rifles of some kind. They surely look to be energy weapons of some kind, rather than chemically powered kinetic weapons. What with all that wiring on the outside. And the "bell" gave them a sort of retro-future look even then; a laser blunderbus" if you will. Don't the sculpts actually predate Rogue Trader somewhat?

I think the whole range were sculpted by Bob Naismith in that nebulous era before the rules were fully written so they were just designed as 'space guns' without any official name or designation.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head, even Stuff of Legends describes these has pre-rogue trader.

Most of the weapons were on a Z-mould*, (including others like the ones used by the 'Fish Men'), but I'm not sure if they were designed first by someone and then just used by Bob, or if they were subsequently put on a Z mould after being designed first by Bob.

* - Z moulds (pretty sure that's what they used to be called!) were ones that were created for studio sculptor use with items like equipment and weapons etc on for continuity of design and to save time in sculpting models.

I don't think they are lasers since lasers had these elongated barrels.

The Le2 remake has Disntegration gun and Disintegration Pistol.

Another thought - I think that these may be Volkite weapons. Like note the fluff description that they were intended to be the main weapon of Space Marines. I wouldn't be surprised if they dug them out of some old draft of Rogue Trader and put them into Horus Heresy as an in-joke.

They're just cool ShootyDeathBastard energy weapons designed before there were any limitations. As they're earlier than pretty much anything else 40k, they predate the both the fluff and the nomenclature.

Yeah, these are pretty much pre-anything, so call their weapons pretty much anything you want!

I think I'll interpret them as Volkite weapons unless someone can get info from Bob Naismith himself or someone other in the know.

My basis for this theory is that they brought back Grav Attack vehivle, contemptor dreadnoughts, robots, old land speeder and other old stuff. So bringing back weapon that was originally intended for marines makes sense.

Even then you can begin to see the scale creep. They're a skosh larger than the earlier true 25mm space people, but not quite as big as the later RT humans. Less bulky. Shorter. I do so love them. :) Somehow they seem even more sinister than their later and larger cousins.
