Buying from USA

Has anyone in UK recently bought from Ebay USA ? I've come across lots of lovely Squats at reasonable prices even with P&P but have a concern with customs. Years ago I would ask the seller to claim item is a gift and under $15 which would mean I wouldn't have to pay extra but not sure what the situation is now.

That sounds like customs fraud?

The legality aside, if they claim it is less than what it is and it goes missing, they will only be able to claim what they said it was worth not its true worth. If you bought $200 of models and made them say it was $14 and it went missing, would you expect a $200 refund or a $14 one?

it's been a little bit since I brought from eBay US. I do (and did) a bit of buying from the USA and sometimes would have it sent to a cousin in the USA to forward it to me which could be a bit cheaper sometimes, but was atleast alot more trustworthy to come through right.

If you use the eBay 'pay it all so you don't have to worry'... some say don't do it cause it's a ripp-off cause you might pay more when it should be but to tell the truth, sometimes it's worth it even if you end up paying a bit more.

it's.. always tricky to say 'list it as gift' cause yeah.. that is fraud. Always has been. And more chance of not getting stuff because of it.

So if they will just sell via the eBay one-pay thing (forgot what it's called these days.. international shipping or something) then that might just be worth it more. though the USA are currently charging there citizens huge mark-up on shipping and receiving stuff for some reason and I believe political relations with the UK aren't great right now, so shipping may cost a bit more because of these things.

You might need to be careful about combining items if they are being sold via the Global Shipping Programme. I had some woes with a chap in Europe (some years ago now) where I discovered I couldn't off a combined invoice for GSP items - and he didn't want to pay £18 for each blister to be shipped separately! I now put a warning note on GSP auctions to reduce the chances of a repeat. So I'd make sure I'd investigated the postage fully first.

I think if I do dip my toe in the USA market I will try for something on the cheaper side just to see how it all works. As I said at beginning the only reason I'm even looking is that there seems to be way more squats for sell over the pond compared to here.
