BOYL Participation Games

Hi all - is anyone running participation games at BOYL who still has space? I was too slow on the uptake to get a table for my own game... but I'd be sad not to get some gaming in somewhere. I'll be there all weekend and have a plentiful collection of figures to bring!

should be able to find if there are some there ^_^
Ahh I didn't realise the game titles were links! I'll see on the day if I can get involved with Padre's games on Friday, maybe try some space fleet, maybe paint up some models for the "How to do Oldhammer" game that @twisted moon discusses in his own thread if there's still space there. I'm sure I won't have trouble finding folks that'll let me push a figure around.

I'll bring my Heroquest set in case I might be able to play that on one of the picnic tables too.

Hey - we’re running participation games most of Sunday (Death Game 40,000 - SELWG). Each game will be a chaotic, 45 minute mini dungeon crawl. We’re not pre-booking players but can fit 6 people each session 🙂

I did wonder on how much "management" to add, for instance should I attempt to track who might be playing in what game and what games might have spaces. However I figured that odds were very few people would use the site to do that - the majority already have ways they want to organise and trying to impose something "top down" never works well so I left it quite simple. Part of the appeal of BOYL is that it's wooly and I don't want to ruin that with too much structure :)

Underlines were so 1996 ;)

I do wonder about a few other "views" of the games and if that might be of use. Although I don't want to add too much extra to the menus, so they might just be slightly more hidden views. Hopefully any changes will be fairly minor, but what works and doesn't will be interesting to gather at BOYL this year.

It would be great to have you join the game. I have been a little bit quiet on here about the game because I am working on repairing and converting scenery for the table top. (I should put a post up regarding my various projects.) I am going to start a thread at some point to discuss the scenario. I have a bunch of ideas and need to decide between them, but they have to be informed by the number of players likely to join the game, etc. And the scenario rules have to have a fairness about them. I will try to begin the thread up soon. Meanwhile, back to hills and spooky woods and ruined churches and tombs and crypts, just some of which you can see here. 😜

Oh my days.

I always thought these games were closed/private, and unless I could pre-book something, I'd always be a spectator.

This has blown my mind!!

So what's the etiquette? Just turn up with something for a game? Contact the organiser in some way before the day?

I believe that the etiquette is that there is no official etiquette! In the BOYL FAQ, Under "So how do I actually get to play in a game?" it says ...

Did we mention that BOYL is a bit woolly? Well The booking system will tell you what games are running and when. Some will be games being run privatly that you might want to watch, some might be being run specifically as show games inviting an audience and finally there are some looking for players.

In any case it's down to you to contact whoever is organising the game and make enquiries about joining in! Hopefully whoever has booked a table for a game that looks interesting has included a link to somewhere with some more information such as the Oldhammer forum or Facebook group and you'll be able to contact them using that platform.

The BOYL website itself is more just for providing the address, any last minute updates and vaguly ensuring that what tables we have have some games on them. The actual who is playing in what and when we leave up to indivudals.

I would definitely contact the organisers before the day. A few of the games will set up Facebook groups before hand. That's the main method I use. Also (having organised one pretty much every year) often people fail to turn up on the day or have somehow double booked themselves, so some games may have unexpected spaces on the day. Some may also be amenable to letting you join in by taking control of a unit or two. There's no harm in asking if you can join in in some way.

i think weazil has booked a number of games on behalf of members of the crown of command discord server. he's still probably your best point of contact.
