Those who follow my blog or Instagram will know that since 2019 I have been making the annual pilgrimage to East Stoke outside Newark for the BOYL event, hosted by Foundry Miniatures.

This year was no different, except to say that I left my painting to the über last minute, and then got caught up in terrible traffic all along the route. I got there in good time but was feeling rather stressed out from the whole journey.

Chaos Mutant Goblins – Painted by @OldManPaints

That aside, I bumped into lots of familiar faces and met up with quite a few folk from Instagram, who’d not met before in real life. Finally got to meet Andrew AKA @Ketiltrout, who I chat to a fair bit as he’s hands down one of the best painters of old orcs going. The flat-capped Youtuber called @nergling and Andy AKA@majorsmith1940, Tom AKA @filmdegminiatures, Ravening Horde who has, in the past sent me a huge bunch of pre slotta orcs and quite a few other folks, my normal Buddies of @gnoll Brush, @diehardminiatures, @little soldier company and Curtis from Ramshackle Games were there too, plus too meant others to mention.

The Old man the Ketiltrout and the Gnoll – Oldhammer enthusiasts

I guess I’m kinda boring really because I never go to play the games. I only go to see people’s painted miniatures and to chat with other enthusiasts. It’s only once a year so it’s enough to just be able to peruse Bryan Ansell’s amazing collection of Painted minis which are on show at the Foundry store..

As I said before Ketiltout is one of the best oldhammer painters out there IMO, and he even won a prize for his Asgard Dragon. I had a good chat to him and he let me photograph a whole range of his figures. See below.

I was also lucky enough to have a brief chat with this fella…know who it is? Check out Mr Asgard AKA mark Stephenson doing a proper Photobomb. Just prior to this photo I enjoyed speaking to mark and his son in law who’s travelled all the way from New Zealand and was loving his first BOYL. I did also manage to get the briefest of chats with Tony Yates and Diane Ansell, who are both always lovely.

After not winning anything in the painting competition, again, I mooched around saying my goodbyes. TBH I can’t see myself ever winning anything now, there were a lot more entries this year and the standard was excellent, way above my average skill level. Joked with Chris AKA Ninjabread who wins something every year with his amazingly painted figures, that if there’s ever a time when he doesn’t win, we’re gonna have to book him in for counselling.

I’m always amazed by the terrain and gaming tables, which have clearly had hours and hours of love.

Tony Ackland was in attendance, as was Jervis Johnson, whom I somehow missed. I spotted Trish Carden (formerly Morrison) too, but never had a chance to speak with her, the same with Kev Adams. So I feel like Although I spoke to a lot of folk….I didn’t get around everyone like I wanted to.

As ever I always try to support the event by buying a few miniatures from the shop to go with the Fantastic Event mini which was sculpted by none other than Bob Olley.

Cool Bob Olley Wizzard.

So all in all, another great day out. As a youth, we were never really able to connect to other people in the hobby, especially as I lived out in the sticks. Thanks to Instagram, The oldhammer community on facebook and now the Crown of Command Podcast. I feel really connected to lots of keen and friendly painters.

Cheers for reading my ramble…
