Seals of Ghrond
"Dark Elf City of Ghrond was founded to observe changes and threats emerging from the Northern Realms of Chaos. It is famous for crafting magical seals, powerful talismans that protect their wearers from foul winds of sorcery.
“Seals of Ghrond” Blood Bowl team derives its name from these famous artefacts. It was chosen by the founder and current owner of the team, somewhat controversial Mr. Samuel, ‘cause he felt it was a word with a strong meaning. In addition there were perceived marketing and fan affiliation advantages involved. Unfortunately the free-lance visual designer hired was not informed about neither the intended meaning of the name nor Ghrond’s geographical position several hundred miles inland. At this point Mr. Samuel’s treasury was sealed and, along with it, the team’s fate.
Coupled with design accident, the calculating and greedy attitude of Mr. Samuel has caused problems in attracting loyal fans for his new-founded team. Fortunately there is a reasonable anti-fan crowd, which means team’s pre-season matches have always had at least a few spectators. Listening to the endless jokes about diving tackles or blubber and standing in a rain of fish might not be pleasing for the players, but at least they mean some revenue!"
Team Colours: Turquoise and Yellow
Team Song (unofficial): Sealed with a Kiss
Coach: H. Klum
6 Linemen (Grypus, Barbatus, Callorhinus, Ursinus, Otaridus, Zalophus)
4 Blitzers (Cephalus, Monachus, Erignathus, Halichoerus)
Runner (Phocarctos)
2 Re-rolls
Spare Names: Witch Elves (Leonina, Fasciata); Assassins (Megallos, Gracilis); Runner (Pagophilus)
Oh dear… I’ve decided to collect and paint some Blood Bowl. I chose Dark Elves ‘cause I have a WHFB army and this kind of expands the theme. The number of figures in a team also means that I’ll be able to experiment and (try to) improve my painting without too much commitment and trouble as opposed to an army project. So I humbly went to internet auction side (you’d never guess which one ) … and ended up with dark elves and with two other teams (Skaven and Chaos) as well! Oh dear.
Anyways, let’s start with the elves. I’ll use conversions as Witch Elves and Assassins, the rest of the team is 2nd edition fellows. Here’s A Blitzer, the first figure I managed to paint:
Something must be done about the base sides, I just threw some paint into it ’cause I wanted to finish this. Also, the team logo and player number need to be done. I think I’ll make and paint a shield separately and attach that to the shoulder pad. Maybe I’ll paint some numbers on the figure too. Uncertainty…
I tried acrylic retarder with the turquoise. Rest of the colours I did with my old-fashioned way. Non-metallic metal is a bit so-so in my opinion, it should probably have been done with thin, successive layers instead of the style I used here. But that’s the one style I know how to do.
I also run into my old trouble with eyes when painting this figure: I have rather strong glasses (talking to mr. myopic here!) which make everything look a bit smaller than it is to my naked eye. And the problem is that I can focus with only one eye when not wearing glasses. This makes painting (especially) intricate details very challenging – I usually just do them with my glasses on and accept the result (usually it works out fine – when one ages one begins to accept ). And I really don’t want to get a magnifier.
Here are some idea pictures for the team logo:
I’m leaning to the one on the left. With small adjustment I might be able to get the player number to the shield – the one based on the one on the right would include it in the middle of the seal.
Any comments and tips are welcome!
