Basing Skaven

I am a huge fan of Andy Chambers original Skaven army from the pages of WD, pictures of which hang above my painting station for inspiration. As I slowly build an oldhammer army of Skaven from Ebay I am trying to recreate a lot of what made that army so impressive. One thing that continues to befuddle me though is how to recreate the fantastic bases that Chamber used. I know its possible, based on the Realms of Chaos blog where the author very effectively creates an army to match Andy Chamber's, but I'm just not certain how to go about it. I am relatively new to painting miniatures; I played 3E as a teenager, but back then my painting was limited to model airplane paints and three or four quick basecoats. It's only recently (atarting about 2 years ago) that I both started playing and collecting again, and started attempting painting to a standard that I am satisfied with ( I just last month won a painting competition at my FLGS). Any assistance with the techniques for bases would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to have alook at the WD to see how he did it, if you want to ask questions to the guy behind the realms of chaos blog (not to be mistaken for the realm of chaos 80's one) he's a member here, name's Nico and I'm pretty sure he could tell you how he did his.

Hi mate and thank for the Blog 8-)

Basing is really important for me, and I always take time for this phase during the painting army/model processus.

For the Skaven bases, I used :
1) I glued Cork on the base to make a level.
2) I glued some big sized sand to make some stones on the base.
3) I finally glued small sized sand to make earth.

Painting the base. Citadel colors range
Paint the rocky zones of the base with Mechanicus Standard Grey
First highlight Dawntone Grey (drybrush)
Second highlight with Administratum Grey (drybrush)

Paint the earthy zones of the base with Mournfang Brown, and shade with Agrax.
First highlight Mournfang Brow (drybrush)
Second highlight with XV-88 (drybrush)
Third highlight Zandri Dust (drybrush)
Fourth highlight Screaming Skull (drybrush)

I finish with light drybrush of Longbeard Grey (dry color) all around the base to make a unity between colors grey/brown.

I add some tuft from army painter range.

I admit it's a complex processus but It make a nice result !! Try something between my technic and your personnal colors... and send me pics ;)

Awesome thankyou! That does sound much more involved that anything I've done yet in regards to bases, but if you're army is anything to go by, the results are definitely worth it. I'm going to start experimenting with that right away. It will take me a while to accumulate enough JesGoodwin figures to get even close to your army, ( I just last month managed to finish collecting 1 each of the original 22), but I'm going to see what I can approximate with a mix of the old and new figures (I love the Goodwin era Skaven, but at least the new ones dont look like monkey-rats anymore). I'll start a thread posting my results in the upcoming months.

The chamber's bases are a bit of a mystery. I thought he used Spanish moss but after experimenting, I'm not quite sure anymore.
