Basing a well known red dragon

Afternoon all,

I have been quiet lately, had lots of projects buzzing around my head and it all got a bit too much.
So for a change I have gone back to a range that's a little bit different, the Citadel ad&d miniatures. This Larry Elmore depiction of a red dragon blew my mind when I bought the red box (i was 8).
I finally managed to grab the miniature and im wondering how to base it, A sea of gold would be a new one for me but might look rubbish

Although I won't be running any D&D, I wil still base it on a normal base.
The only D&D i like is the old BECMI and possibly AD&D (1st or 2nd edition)
Basing this range has always bothered me, do I do a flagstone base, but some of the monsters are outdoor types, or a standard grass type.
Possibly a mix

It's really bothering me, I just pulled all my ad&d citadel out of their bases

A perennial problem. I assume that you can't face cutting off tabs and going for clear bases? If so, types that you might find both inside dungeons and in the great outdoors might be best on mossy rubble style basing. It shouldn't look too out of place in caverns, dungeons or the wilder fringes.

It just so happens that I picked these up not so long ago, Im handy with the miliput for the rubble

I went with a cracked waste with some bits of treasure scattered in, but it's a really early base for me. I ought to step her and repaint her and give her a better base. She's my first dragon. Lovely old girl! (Which brings up an interesting question: how do you sec a dragon? I'd guess they'd go the bird route with more showy and colorful males and more subdued females. Maybe I need a second Dungeon Red.)
