Banners

Beginning to start thinking about making some banners for my Skaven and just wondering what materials people use.

At the moment I'm looking at a drinks can, greenstuff and plain old paper. Paper is probably the easiest not only to make a banner but to also paint but I've just never been happy with the final look. I think its down to the thinness of the paper and also the flatness of the banner compared to a more 3d look you would get with plastic banner.

There have been a few nice fabric ones shown off here before, I've never been quite sure about the scale of the weave to use fabric myself, but those did look good. I think the last banners I did were on my Reaver Titan and I used very thin tinplate overlaid with paper (since I'd printed the basic design to work from), I'd probably try that again with any larger banner I wanted some shape to. Smaller ones I think I'd probably just use paper for, but I might look for a paper with some texture to it. I did successfully use tissue soaked in PVA for the fabric on my windmill and I guess to some extend that technique might work for a banner.

There are some companies doing modelled banners out there such as these from https://anvilindustry.co.uk/banners-flags

Which might be a good option

And I think a good totem looks pretty cool.

some of the weave isn't quite right but you can get some more pricey fabric which will do fairly well. Not a huge fan of the pre-made plastics (though have used some for markers or when they come with some scenery.

Paper can work out pretty well, more so if you try something like printing line art and then painting over it. Depending on how you want to do it, there are a range of things which can be painted on for various effects like scraps of hessian, even leather. sometimes, just try to experiment until you get something you are happy with ^_^ and even then, you might want to change it and try again every so often.

For me it depends on the size and desired shape. I have just started my first 25mm banner bearer in about 30 years and am planning to use paper. It will be a small simple banner hanging straight. Bigger fancier banners may be other materials.

I always use paper (standard A4 thickness); mostly designing the banner in a vector program and printing the outlines of the design. I then Matt or satin varnish the paper (spray can) to saturate it, so it does not drink the paint I brush on.
When done and glued to the mini, I shape it as seems fit, rolling it over brush handles etc. Then a coat of modge podge if I think the banner needs stiffening.

Old school is tomato puree tube

New is laser print a design then used diluted PVA to shape it around the banner pole and give it animation. Once it dries it stays reasonably in shape.

After much trial and error I think I've managed to find a solution that works for me.

I decided to use greenstuff as this allows me to sculpt in folds and tears etc into the banner. I also created them as separate pieces which makes painting especially freehand a lot easier. Then I've glued to the pole and only then finished the sculpting.

Here is quick picture showing the banners fixed and the added banner around the pole.
