After locating the 40K rule book, I've found myself painting my first marines in many a long year. The stockpile included a box of Mk6 plastics, which pleasingly contained 16 of the original 18 sprues - far more than I expected. The boy built a full squad of 10, complete with flamer and missile launcher.
.
I asked him what colour scheme he was thinking of. "Some sort of camouflage" he mused. Clearly he has been carefully studying the original source materials and has not been distracted by any garish johnny-come-latelies in bright red or electric blue. As we have a load of jungle terrain he wanted a jungle theme which really meant something green based.
Camouflage is quite hard to get right, so we painted up a couple of test marines. They were Foundry Phlegm green, over a darker base green (don't know what this is, it hasn't got a label). Then they had Moss Green irregular patches which were outlined in Boneyard. I really like the look of two relatively similar camo colours, with pale lining instead of dark colours between. These two have got a couple of different 'choc chip' style blotches. First I tried black in boneyard, but they were too similar to the pale lining on the base patches, so then I reversed it out. Another change from first effort to second were to tone down the red stripe and make it shorter. On the first I did the chapter badge in the same size and colour as my black Dark Angels, but it really didn't work. Without black lining it didn't stand out, and black lining something that complex would have been a nightmare, so I went for a black circle on the second. Not only was this easier and had a more military feel to it, but it was also a pleasing echo of the badge on the classic RT Blood Angel captain with brown camo, a skull on his power glove and white hair (I'm sure you know the one). Any thoughts or ideas before I go with the right hand marine's colour scheme for the rest of the squad?
