Back to the beginning with Mk6 plastics

Scalene

Vassal
After locating the 40K rule book, I've found myself painting my first marines in many a long year. The stockpile included a box of Mk6 plastics, which pleasingly contained 16 of the original 18 sprues - far more than I expected. The boy built a full squad of 10, complete with flamer and missile launcher.

I asked him what colour scheme he was thinking of. "Some sort of camouflage" he mused. Clearly he has been carefully studying the original source materials and has not been distracted by any garish johnny-come-latelies in bright red or electric blue. As we have a load of jungle terrain he wanted a jungle theme which really meant something green based.

Camouflage is quite hard to get right, so we painted up a couple of test marines. They were Foundry Phlegm green, over a darker base green (don't know what this is, it hasn't got a label). Then they had Moss Green irregular patches which were outlined in Boneyard. I really like the look of two relatively similar camo colours, with pale lining instead of dark colours between. These two have got a couple of different 'choc chip' style blotches. First I tried black in boneyard, but they were too similar to the pale lining on the base patches, so then I reversed it out. Another change from first effort to second were to tone down the red stripe and make it shorter. On the first I did the chapter badge in the same size and colour as my black Dark Angels, but it really didn't work. Without black lining it didn't stand out, and black lining something that complex would have been a nightmare, so I went for a black circle on the second. Not only was this easier and had a more military feel to it, but it was also a pleasing echo of the badge on the classic RT Blood Angel captain with brown camo, a skull on his power glove and white hair (I'm sure you know the one). Any thoughts or ideas before I go with the right hand marine's colour scheme for the rest of the squad?

Those are great! The badge on the right is the way to go in my opinion, but for the helmet stripe I prefer the left one going all the way down the beak.

The first pic reminds me of me 20 odd years ago, but without the cutting mat - I used mums table cloth for that purpose & super glued it to the table too ;)

The camo scheme turned out great, I'm all for alternative paint schemes on marines.

Fantastic. Prefer the guy on the right for the shoulder markings and the helm stripe.

Don't repaint the guy on te left tho, he's just a bit of a rebel with his own sense of style.

Both wonderful, but the marine on the right is the winner for me. The details of the badge and the helmet stripe stand out more.

I concur, the guy on the right looks great, but the complete stripe on the helmet is a deal :)

Thanks for the feedback. There seems to be quite a lot of opposition to the 'half stripe'. I did it partly because it was making the narrow front of the helmet look a bit crowded when combined with the camo pattern. I will try a full stripe, but in the darker red.

I like both schemes, and both stripes, personally I'm mixing it up for my own rt marines having full stripes, and half stripes (top only and bottom only) no stripes and 3/4 stripes (full stripe that ends on the top of the head instead of the back of the head) I like a bit of variety in my army, plus back in the old days marines were never afraid to add a bit of a personal touch to their armour so a bit of variety fits IMHO

Splendid, I really like the right one and all the modificationsare worth it. Maybe I would have kept the reds a little brighter (sort of midway between firts and second model) but pics may make things looks what they aren't.It's just a little orange highlighted red is always nice to have ;)
Good job anyway, now I get my "military" marines instead of golden monks ones...

Lovely camo there. I don't prescribe to the later notion that 'marinez is da bomb and dontz wear camo oz they iz hard as Chuck Norris'. Camo works for the elite of the Empire. I did a squad of space wolves way back inspired by the 'covert' artwork. Sand and tiger strips. Lovely!
