Army Minimums?

As I said in my introduction, although I started buying models in third edition, I never actually got to play it-so I apologize for what may very well be a stupid question

I was looking through the Warhammer Armies supplement last night and I had a question about the Minimum model requirements. Do these regardless of the size of the army? For example, the Dark Elves appears to require 60 models (40 warriors, 10 crossbow, 10 witch elves, I think), totaling to something near 700-800 points. How does one build a 1,000 point army when 80% of it is already chosen? I was even more confused considering some of the lists seem to have no compulsory choices. Thanks!

I believe that those number are based on a 3000pt army...or at least that is the way I interpreted them...so you can scale those numbers down to the size force you are working on. Or you can ignore them all together and make the force you want.....thats what I tend to do. I use the army list as a basic guideline then go with what I want to have and the models I have available. So don't think of them as written in stone...but as suggestions.

Cheers,

Blue

Yeah, the DE army is a bit of a pain with the compulsories. As Blue says, the limits in Armies are based around 3000pt armies so if you want to play 1000pts divide the compulsories by three or whatever you fancy, the compulsories are only really there for tournament play.

Thanks guys! I don't know that I was thinking of actually building an army or it was just an "intellectual" curiosity. Especially after I noticed that some armies, like the High Elves seemed to have no compulsory choices and some of the others that had a high number (like orcs and skaven) were at least cheaply priced.

I think that there was even a WD where this was suggested though I guess its not official. (if you can get official for an oop game?)

However sometimes I use the army lists only as a guide anyway.

Sometimes I like the restrictions as written even for a 1000 point force, sort of forces you to have a basic force.
