Any differences in the '88 and '91 printings of RoC books?

Well, as the topics say - apart from the cover, is there any other difference in the two Realm of Chaos books between the '88 printing and the '91 reprint? I assume the contents are more or less identical between the printings, but are there any other differences such as binding quality, printing quality, thickness of paper, cover stability etc?

You mean between 'Slaves to Darkness' and 'The Lost & the Damned'? They're two completely different books. StD deals with Khorne and Slaanesh, and LotD deals with Nurgle and Tzeentch.

Or was there a reprint of StD that I didn't know about?

Yes, there was a reprint of StD.

This one is the original '88 printing:

(note the COOL LOGO lol!)

and this one is the '91 reprint:

(note the not-as-cool logo).

No idea if the '91 has different production values or Errata amended or what have you.

Weird, I've *never* seen that reprint cover, and I was working there at the time!

Re: Any differences in the '88 and '91 printings of RoC book

My understanding is there is no difference except the age warning and this was only put on for the US market. I'm sure I read that somewhere.

Of course a suggested for mature readers logo marks you out as both a cool kid and an owner of a first print run copy so is worth at least an extra £50.

Take everything, including the first bit with a pinch of salt.

Re: Any differences in the '88 and '91 printings of RoC book

Erny, is that an informed opinion or just hearsay?

Given the option, all things being equal, I'd prefer to get the "better" version. If everything else is the same, I'd stick with the first printing (due to the covers, as Zhu pointed out). I don't care much for being "true" however, so if the second edition is nicer in other aspects than the slightly naff cover I'd prefer to get that.

Dieselmonkey: No idea if the 2nd printing was US only or UK too... Both volumes were re-printed, both have the same "improved" logo and amped up colour levels on the cover.

Re: Any differences in the '88 and '91 printings of RoC book

When in doubt always go for the "old" version, you know it's right 8-) (that said, I had never seen the 91 version...)

Re: Any differences in the '88 and '91 printings of RoC book

Its vaguely remembered from the horses mouth... I think...pinch of salt.

But to clarify the first printing was for US and UK but only included the warning for US consumption, it wasn't needed for UK. Probably Bollocks.

Re: Any differences in the '88 and '91 printings of RoC book

Hopefully someone will pop out of the woodwork who happen to own one of each printing... It really doesn't have to be the same book, I think a comparison between an '88 StD and an '91 LaD would work too.

Re: Any differences in the '88 and '91 printings of RoC book

Nope Std (never noticed that before STD for the Slaanesh book, ho,ho) and LaD are slightly different beasts inside. Well obviously GW late 80's early 90's chaos books with BW illustrations in side and heavy metal but other than that different beasts. They are compatible, indeed rules from the first are needed in the latter but it all works a little differently.

I don't see how this comparison would help you. I'm guessing there is little to no difference and if there is perhaps the reprint works better with LaD.

Sorry, my bad... I was under the impression that both books had been re-printed. Seemed to remember LaD with the nice, yellow RoC logo too.

I know the contents of the two volumes are completely different. That they are two different books. Not interchangeable. Discrete entities. I get that. Honest.

It seems the second printing of StD would be the better bet then, seeing how it matches the LaD book's RoC-logo.

And yes... late 80's STD gets a chortle out of me too.

I've still got my 91 reprint from when I was a teenager but did pick up an original 88 printing a few years back (it was being sold with a copy of LatD that I was after). Can't say I noticed anything different in the contents. I chose to keep my reprint version (memories... page 176 ;) ) and sold the 88 printing for £50.

Do you remember any difference with the weight / thickness of paper or the quality of the binding?

Also, the 91 appears less common, but I don't think there's any cost difference on eBay, they seem interchangeable from that POV.

I think they were pretty much the same. The binding was good so no problems with loose pages.
