Annually honor / send fanmail to old legends?

Hi folks,

I just had an idea and thought I'd throw it out here for your consideration.

As we're all well aware, there are many artists, writers, and sculptors who created the miniature worlds we love that are now getting older, and with that, frailer. Some of us have the opportunity to meet them occasionally at events like BOYL - which I'd love to fly across the pond and attend myself someday - while others of us don't. Some of these foundational creative people may be fairly easy to reach online via email or facebook, while others, more mindful of their privacy perhaps, may be more difficult to reach. (I greatly respect people's right to privacy, even though in the U.S. we don't have privacy anymore thanks to tech companies, so I have no interest in "outing" any Oldhammer creative who prefers to keep their information private.)

But some of the people on this board already know some of these people personally. So perhaps we could write letters of appreciation to these artists and then send them to a person on this board who knows them, who would gather them and pass them along, thus avoiding disclosing any private addresses? I'm basically thinking of a letter-writing equivalent of the yearly group miniature painting project. So one year we might choose as a forum to honor a person like Tony Ackland, or Bob Olley, etc., and people could write them a letter (or email, although that's not quite as oldschool), then send it to a person on this board who knows the artist and can pass all the messages along? If people were interested, maybe we could also voluntarily pool some funds for / as a small token of appreciation. Money complicates everything and I respect that contributing to such a gift would be harder for some than others, so I'm not stating that aspect as a must.

There's a part of me that just wants to shake these people's hands and say, for whatever it's worth to them, "thank you, your work has meant a lot to me." We could do it once a year, maybe around the winter holidays, a yearly award of recognition from the Oldhammer Forum. Or somesuch.

Anyhow, I think you understand my intent here, even if the implementation is vaguely defined at the moment. I'm not so much bringing this to you as a finished idea but as a conversation starter to see if there's interest and what we might make of this as a group. Your better ideas are certainly welcome. And if the consensus here turns out to be that this just isn't going to work, I can respect that, too.

If this interests you, then by all means, have at it and comment. If it doesn't, be well and go paint a miniature!

As a fellow yank who can't usually do this, I think that's a solid idea. I'm not sure how to implement it, but I like it. Maybe something like the card might work? We all write short thank yous and someone Jolly (OE) based prints them out and delivers them?

Side note: I now want to figure out how to"jolly base" a miniature. I feel certain there's a Christmas tree involved.
