All Oldhammer books and magazines I bought recently smell.

first things I would think is:
) smokers home? even if it's not cigerette smell, smoking can react with things like paper.. More known and important with plastics but paper too
) damp enivorment. Even without mould, damp enivorments can create problems with paper.

depending on your 'point of view', if its really a problem you can unbind the pages and use a folder to store them sleved which might help with browing

It's common for any books over a certain age to smell a little, but it's not usually so bad as to be off-putting, in fact a lot of people like the smell of old books. But then I've had really really stinky books from car boot sales, and it's usually caused by pets, smoking and damp.

A couple of things I've found works:

Exposing the pages to sunlight really helps, just a page a day, don't over-do it or they'll fade.
Put the book and some bicarbonate of soda in an airtight box and then removing after the smell has mostly gone - usually takes a week or two.

All my WDs, Compedniums and Journals are poly-bagged and boarded with acid free boards, none of them smell bad.

Just don't do what I was recommended for my dogs of war book- putting it in a bag with a tumble dryer sheet for a couple of days. The flowery smell was even worse than the damp one!
