Adeptus Arbites

Arbitrators are, for some misterious reason, kinda charming. These 'Dredd in 40K' have become quite an iconic presence for a few Oldschool gamers. Funny, if you think it is an army which has not got much love from GW for a real long time. We only have a couple of models (in the very same pose) and no new minis since the very beginning of 2nd Ed (apart from an attempt for Necromunda and Inquisitor)

I had these minis for ages:

Just a core, but I managed to have fun with that. At some time I saw this conversion work by Mike McVey:

So I fell in love with it and felt that I needed one of my own. My first attempt (I believe at some moment by 1997-98) was this... thing:

It is a converted Chimera, as you would have spotted. But of course I could not be satisfied at all with this, so I had to repaint it. Arbitrators need black gear. Don't ask me why, but these guys really need ominous colours.

But then I knew I was in need for more Arbites ;). I traded for some minis and I finally got enough models to build up two squads, one with shotguns and one with bolters. The main problem was the Judge. I couldn't have twenty different minis, but at least I would not have two identical Judges. I converted this one who was to lead the bolter squad:

So I finally got a couple of homogeneous squads:

Then I fell in love again, this time I fell for FW Arvus Lighter. It looked square enough for my force ::). The model itself is a mess and needed extensive work just to make the pieces fit  , but that is another different story. The important thing is that I finally enjoyed painting it:

After all this mess, I painted a few Arbites for a friend. I'm only posting here the conversions on the Judges (the rest of the minis are just the same!)

(Yes, there is a plausible explanation an explanation behind the lascannon guy)

You can see some more pics and story here :):

I also got the Necromunda pack ages ago, but I have never come to paint it. My bad! I must do something about that!

As I said on the blog, I love everything about this. The bolter/shotgun conversion looks really great. I have to steal that and use for my projects.
You could have sculpted longer hair on the lascannon judge to make an Andy Chambers judge ;)

Arbite: Sir we need more Crowd control! Watercannon? Gas Grenades? Riot Shield?
Judge: Bring me the Lascannon!

These are really great. I love the riot control vehicle, I prefer its design to the McVey original in fact.

Really, really love those models. I painted up a squad myself years ago. They never really saw much action except for guarding a rather valuable 'Spook' container in a game of Necromunda. :(

Having just painted up a batch of marines as truly-Dredd-coloured Arbites I understand your passion. These guys are great little projects and yours look fab!

Thank you all! :) I said over the blog that I firmly believe these are quite an iconic part of 40K, allowing you lots of different scenarios and conversion possibilities (I'm thinking of Sentinels, vehicles, riot control squads, bikes and/or horses...) Maybe I should spend some more time on these guys and see what comes up... ;)
