A view view from a ridge

'Now tell me, what do you see?'. Magnusson regarded Thristan keenly, enjoying the confusion on his charges face. Thristan struggled to catch his breath as he reached the top of the ridge.......'A plain'..., he coughed a little disappointedly as he peered over the top....'an empty plain, no wait theres some rocks, they must be the thing that's so bloody important we had to get up at some ungodly hour to come and look at are they?' he snapped, his cheeks still flushed from the hike.
Magnusson gave him one of his long looks 'try again young man, what do you see?'.
'What do you mean 'what do I see?' I can see rocks, grass the odd bird and a mad old git that dragged me all the way up here to show them to me!'.
'Watch your tongue you wee pup' snorted Magnusson, 'im in no mood to be growled at, not without my first drink inside me!. You young man are in a position many would kill for, chosen as the best among your peers, given the chance to become a general in the kings own army. Your hardly my choice but, well, I have been wrong before. BUT', he spat the but 'if you want to get anywhere in your training you have to learn to see things as they really are!'
'That's a joke' replied Thristan 'officer training, that's what you call this is it?. Given to a flatulent, alcoholic, half mad old git who takes me on stupid hikes to see stupid rocks at stupid bloody times of day, with the added addition of being patronised at every moment of the day!. Whats your next training exercise? got a house that needs painting, floor that needs sanding eh?.
'As a general would see it' continued Magnusson, ignoring Thristans tirade 'we can see a flat plain, no adverse terrain, a ridge of high ground and no cover to speak of. If an enemy marched against you to meet on this field you would meet on even terms, head to head with no place to hide. Its the perfect place to learn the basics of command and control of an army. That my dear boy, is what a GENERAL' he spat the last word turning to look at Thristan as he did so, 'would see'.
'So what now?' asked Thristan a little sheepishly, 'we imagine a battle?'.
'Better than that' replied Magnusson raising his staff as he did so 'you may want to shield your eyes this may be a little bright'.

The old man lowered his staff and caught his breath. 'Open your eyes lad'. Thristan slowly lowered his hand from his face, blinking against the rising sun. The sight that greeted him made his jaw drop to his knees. Ranks of troops lined up at each end of the plain, armour glinting in the light, banners fluttering in the morning breeze. He could hear horses snorting and stamping, horns sounding the call to arms, orders being barked by leaders attempting to organize the troops.....'but...but..how?...I don't understand... is all he could manage to force from his swimming brain.
'There is an awful lot you don't understand my boy replied Magnusson with an amused look at the lad. 'Just a little trick I picked up on my travels'.
'You MADE them?' blurted Thristan, unable to hide his amazement.
'Sort of' said the Wizard. 'They neither exist or not exist, sort of an illusion if you will, ones we will control to give you a taste of command.......without getting yourself killed!'.
'We can control them?!' Thristan was struggling to take it all in.
'Of a sort' replied Magnusson, 'they have a degree of free will, they can experience emotions such as pride and fear and can feel pain just as you or I can and as such will act to preserve themselves just as real troops would. They will endeavour to follow our commands but are not prone to recklessness.
Thristan dident know what to say. How had this senile old goat created armies out of thin air?. The only things he had created so far had been foul and antisocial!. 'So, what now?' he ventured.
Magnusson looked at him with a broad smile on his face 'TO BATTLE!'.
@

Well its a load of 1sts on this one. This is the 1st time I have played a game of Warhammer in near as 20 years and its the 1st time ive ever played 2nd ed (it was always 3rd back in the day as it was actually current at the time!). I don't know why but 2nd seems to be the best starting place (it seems more user friendly for some reason, perhaps its the layout?). I decided to keep it as simple as poss, no fancy stuff like champions, artillery, magic etc and reasoned that identical forces would make it easier to just concentrate on re-learning the rules (before I home brew them to death!). I was also playing solo (settle down at the back!) because I am unpop....er it was a week night. However I couldent play without a narrative, hence the above twaddle.
The forces im using are all human and are both identical. They are as follows: 12 Spearmen- light armour, shield, banner
10 Warriors- hand weapon, shield.
5 Horsemen- Spear, Shield.
8 Bowmen - Bow, hand weapon.
Magnusson commands the yellow force and Thristan commands the grey.
As stated in the narrative there is little in the way of terrain, just a few rocks and both forces are set up opposite each other, I don't want to complicate things at this point (but later battles will be messy). On to the battle!
TURN 1

Thristan moved 1st, trying to surprise his tutor while he organised his forces, he moved as far forward as he could with his full force trying to gain the upper hand. His archers shot at the opposing spears without doing any damage. He sent the horsemen around his right flank to try to get behind the enemy line. Magnusson moved more cautiously, refusing the chance to reserve move. He wheeled his warriors to meat the oncoming cav and cut them off. His archers advanced and fired on the warriors facing them, killing one of them.. At this point a giant jumped into the area behind Thristans line... no really, heres the evidence: Satified she had effected the battle the giant stomped off with a muffin in hand saying something about 'little men'. She may have swarn and kicked a child but this cannot be confermed (she dident, im building a character). next, turn 2 (as is customary aftyer turn 1)

Turn 2
My wife wants me to tell you she defo DID NOT kick a child. I include this for my own safety. Right, on with the battle.
Turn 2 began with a bang as Thristan charged his horsemen into the warriors that dared to stand in their way, as they slammed into them they killed 2 of the warriors who held ferm and refused to flee. The rest of his force advanced at pace towards the opposing line. Again the bowmen fired at the spears causing a wound for their efforts.
Not wanting to be out done Magnusson advanced his Spears to a position opposite their opposing spear toting warriors, the archers also advanced, working around the left flank however their shooting was ineffective. Magnusson's next move was to charge his horsemen into Thristans warriors,
Scattering them and sending them packing!.

Turn 3&4
in the following turns things really heated up!. As Thristans warriors ran for their lives he ordered his bowmen to wheel and target the victorious cav, letting fly at close range they turned 3 of their targets to pin cushions. Thinking better of it the horsemen gave up the fight and ran themselves! Not content Thristan ordered the spears to charge their opposite numbers, causing a bloody fight that would continue for most of the battle as a bloody stalemate. Magnusson's Warriors followed the enemy cav, ready to cut them down if they were stupid enough to re-join the fight..... which they duly did, charging the warriors once more Thristans horse were cut down for their trouble!. At the end of the turn Magnusson's hoesemen rallied (both of them) ready to rejoin the fray. This is how things looked at the end of turn 4

Ok this is getting a bit long now!. In turn 5&6 The battle came to a head. Magnusson's horsemen charged headlong at Thristans archers who chose to stand and fire at them, missing every shot. They were sent running (poss screaming) the cav giving chase. The spearmen continued their bloody grind, Magnusson's regiment slowly gaining the upper hand., In the next turn Thristans spears gave in to pressure and turned tail, followed by Magnusson's troops, meaning that only Thristans newly rallied warriors were in any position to put up any kind of a fight. The warriors were soon charged again by the horsemen and deciding the battle was up turned and ran (again). at this point Thristan had no one left to fight that wasent facing the wrong way and running like hell Magusson raised his staff and bought it down hard on the ridge before him. With a flash the forces disappeared only on odd smelling vapour left in their place. He looked round, about to give Thristan some words of comfort for the way the events had played out only to see the top of his charges head disappearing below the lip of the ridge. Thristan sloped off with his hands in his pockets 'sod this for a game of soilders' he exclaimed as he went.

Nice. Go 20mm, go 2nd edition! "Little men" is what mine used to get referred to. Not once toy soldiers, models or whatever, just "little men"!

Now get them painted (or at least a different base coat for each side). Watch scratches using real rocks on the table :)

I got away with no scratches this time but I do need to base them with something!. 'Little men' seems to be the standard name, im sure these women have a handbook full of this type of thing as they seem to use stock responses!. I'm sold on 2nd now too after this but I may bring shades of 3rd into it to.

Great read, I'd have liked paint on the models but after all I'm a painter who doesn't play so who am I to tell anything to a plyer not painting ;).

That kid kicking giant seemed frightening (the one I have at home also calls all my models with the same "little men" name).

Thanks. The 'little men' thing is international! I smell a global conspiracy!. My wife now says she will use ' the vast horde' if it makes me feel better. Im not sure if that is more patronising!.

Wait until she starts to say "your crap" like mine says when she's pissed... :?

Common phrase from my wife is ''Awww ain't they cute'' last used when I was painting Fimir... :O

Firmir are cute, the green, one eyed, foggy perverts!, did you explain their more uhum 'subtle' cultural traits to the other half?.

Yeah I commonly refer to them as my ''Rape-Lizards'' and too be fair she's been around me so long she doesn't even bat an eyelid heh

Good read. My wife just gives a disappointed sigh that seems to say 'shouldn't you be doing something a bit more age appropriate?'. I've started wearing jumpers.

Thanks. Maybe jumpers are the way forward, some sort of maturity camouflage! Now do I choose my batman jumper or the he-man?....
