I spent a interesting day visit visiting the Woking Wargames Store for the first time, where I met fellow oldhammer enthusiass' Tim and Jamie and played my first game of third edition using my new Nippon army.
The game looked like it was a straught forward - line em up and charge across the table, which given my limited numbers and lack of big stuff wasn't going to be in my game plan in any shape way or form (which caught Tim on the hop) As I depoyed in a fairly typical fashion, then manoeuvred, cast magic and threated flanks etc to avoid as much direct contact as possible until it couldn't be avoided. But I'm getting ahead of myself, so let me give you my take on the game on a turn by turn basis and I'll let Tim tell his side of the story. (don't expect this to be balanced).
The initial deployment with me going first (saw me refusing my right flank and hoping to hide in the woods)
My shooting was ineffectual and I cast no spells, waiting for Tims orcs and goblins to get a little closer
Tim passed his animosity tests and led a general advance across the table, again, no real effective archery, but Tim's stonethrower on his left managed to hit my general inflicting two wounds ouch!
Turn two saw my samurai continue their progress to the woods, my archery continued to have little to no effect on Tim's horde, however, this is where my wizards started to hinder Tim's progress with multiple casting of windblast and curse of arrow attraction failing to work, gave Tim's troop pause; whilst his magic phase pulled a surpried on me with a one inch magic bog removing one of my archers units and a wizard! (ouch).
Again, tim's troops passed their animosity test and where he could, the advance continued, again, his stonethrowers inflicted hit, on my archer blocks removing a few figures but not enough to cause me to test for panic.
My third turn saw my archers start to turn the screw on Tim's wyvern rider inflicting hits no both the rider and mount, much to my surprise, but that took three units of archers shooting at it whilst it was still pinned beneath the windblast
Tim's test for animosity saw his goblin skirmishers on his left fail the test and send a volley of arrows into the goblin spear block to their left, again tim advanced where he could (failed strengh test for the wyvern) this time Tims archery was effective but again not enough to cause panic tests, while the stonethrower on the right dropped a shot on my unit of fanatics, removing three quaters of them!
The next turn saw me take advantage of Tim's broken line, inflicting more archery on the wyvern rider - killing the mount and pinning the rider under the continuing windblast spell, my lost unit and magician found their way out of the bog, on the roll of a six, thus, I was able to put my archers on the side of it, away from Tim's advancing orc units, alas I cast more wind blasts to break up Tim's line a bit more and manouvoured my tropps into what I hoped would be advantagous positions in later turns. (Time would tell)
Tim's turn saw his trolls fail their stupidity test and halt, which bunched up his troops on his left as they were quickly running out of space, where he colud he continued to advance, I forget what spells Tim cast at this point, but has I don't anything of serious intent happened, Tim's specative shooting of his stone throwers were wide of their mark but i did loose another couple of archers and Tim's wyvern rider joined the goblins following up behind, which meant the sharman within the unit was able the counter the windblast spell with one of his own.
My next turn saw me starting to disrupt Tim's line even more with a charge of the pitiful few fanatical monks into Tim's savage orcs and the succesful casting of cause animosity on the leading units of orcs in Tim's centre, which had them turning about to attack the Big-uns (Alls fair, in love and wargames!), my few cavalry turned into a nice position to threaten a flank charge if Tim's centre was to continue his advance. The fights went badly, but as expected with my monks acting has a road block for the savage orcs.
Tim's turn saw the trolls remain stupid, he managed to take control of his units and get them back into some kind of order, advancing were possible and his shooting took a couple of figures from my samurai on my left and ashigari on my right, his stone throwers continued to shoot wide of the mark. I was beginning to feel that I might actually be able to start making contact! Tim's magic caught my sanurai in the centre with carode (lost all their armour and weapons)
This turn saw me charge my two large archer units into Tims trolls and orcs flank (I thought it best to attack than receive Tim's charge next turn, especially as I couldn't rely on the trolls remaing stupid for another turn); the archer unit on the right suddenly got the act together and removed nine orcs from Tim's end orc unit, they fortunately made their panic test. The combats went as expected with push backs on both the trolls and orcs in the centre, again the panic tests were made. I also charge both units of samurai (yes even the ones with improvised weapons) to their front which released the goblin fanatics from their hosting units, luckily none of them managed to make their dices rolls thus failing to make contact.
Tim's turn saw the combats go his way, but as we hadn't retired the combat last turn (which would have complicated the entire centre and none of us could remember the rules for supporting ranks, flank charges and interpenetrating formations we decided to say it was a draw and continue the fight, it was also at this point we decided to calll it a game - a good time had by all.
