6th ed WHFB and Deamons of Chaos

Hi!

6th edition WHFB is famous for having had probably the completest set of army books. According to this list it featured three books for Chaos: Hordes of Chaos, Beasts of Chaos and Storm of Chaos. But it did not feature Deamons of Chaos. Was this style of army simply not supported in 6th edition, or is it somehow included in the other three books? If the former, would the 7th edition army book be well suited to use in 6th edition battles?

Cheers!

Well, I mean 1st and 2nd included all the stats in the base set, 3rd ed has it all in one book and 2nd and 3rd both have 'army list' volumes...
The small pamphlet 'Ravening Hordes' released at the beginning of 6th is probably your best guide. It was designed to allow all armies to be played as soon as the rulebook came out and is generally considered more 'balanced' and fun than the army books.

The Chaos armies in 6th edition were a bit mix and match across the books including the three different armies. You chose either a Mortal, Daemonic or Beast General and the core of force came from that category but you could include units from the other two.

Hordes of Chaos included both the Mortals (Chaos Warriors/Marauders) and Daemons.

Beasts of Chaos included Beastmen but also things like extras like Dragon Ogres and Chaos Giants.

The Storm of Chaos was one of the big worldwide campaigns GW used to run (like the Battle for Armageddon and the Eye of Terror) and the despite the title book actually included variant army lists for a whole host of different armies, one of which was if I recall correctly a pure Daemon army (also including a Dwarf Slayer army, Middenheim specific Empire, Dark Elf Slaaneshi cult and Archaeon's personal Horde as well as others).

Hope that helps!

Yes, that's right, first edition has Demons and Balrogs in the core game, but has the Chaos army lists in Forces of Fantasy as well, although refers to the then unpublished Realm of Chaos for the demon rules other than Balrogs. 2nd Edition doesn't really have much chaos-demon stuff - weirdly Ravening Hordes doesn't have level 3 or 4 magicians in it's chaos list, so they can't summon Greater Demons. Odd choice, but I suppose saving the 1000pt creatures for special events makes sense.

For 3rd edition, there is the Realm of Chaos books which have the different Daemonic Army lists, and is unarguably the high point of all chaosness, but only really designed for an all-chaos RoC campaign.

Helps a lot, thank you so much for the breakdown! So it sounds like the Demons of Chaos are not really missing in 6th edition, but rather lumped in with the rest, and if one wants to play a pure demonic arm, there are ways to do so. Correct?
