3rd Ed - Can you embed ethereals in normal Units?

This feels like a fever dream of some sort.

I swear I saw some rules around being able to embed ethereals (maybe just Ghosts?) into normal Units in much the same manner as assassins/fanatics. Now I can no longer find it for the life of me, and I'm not even sure it existed in the first place.

I've gone through the Ethereal rules, charging, advanced rules, magic. There are hundreds of pages in the main rulebook and the ordering of some rules isn't great.

This couldn't be a rule from 3rd Ed Warhammer Siege could it? Did I dream this all up?

Ninja fanatic ghosts!

Just grabbed 2nd Edition Ravening Hordes off the shelf and it states:

The ethereal creature must start the battle hidden amongst and existing regiment. At any point the player chooses the model representing the ethereal creature may be placed anywhere in the regiment. the ethereal creature may then move with complete independance.

Don't know if this got copy-pasted into 3rd at all.

I'm more a 4ed player (back when i played) but i got the 3rd Edition rule book and i says Ethereals need to be bound to a host or as a special contingent but there are some more bits in the Warhammer Fantasty Armies book but.. I might have one some where but.... no clue where.. I'm still trying to figure out where a bunch of beast master figures have gone, let alone some older books.. ^_^;

Thanks Zhu, I think you're right on it being from Ravening Hordes. I've had another look through the 3rd Ed rules but can't see anything there.

Same ManicMan, most of my experience is with 4th, 3rd is quite a different ruleset in comparison. I'm not sure what I find more of an eyebrow raiser about 3rd Edition:
  • Dwarfs can take Giant Spiders as a monstrous host.
  • Bretonnians can take Giant Snails. But no-one else can.
  • If you so choose, you can take a Level 15 Gorgon Wizard.

There are rules embedding ethereals in regulatr undead units in the undead axiliary host for Daemon LEgions in Realm of Chaos: the lost and the Damned.

Yes! That's where it was Weismonsters. I remembered something about weird charge rules coming into play and all the Ethereals popping out.

It looks like Undead Auxiliaries for Chaos have more interesting/better rules than normal Undead. They can take dead Chaos Champions, embed Ethereals and even Skeletons come with what looks like Chaos Armour as standard.

... or this. perhaps my mind is failing.

In terms of rules development it is pretty weird that Embedded Ethereals appear in 2nd Edition Ravening Hordes, then disappear from 3rd Edition Core and Warhammer Armies, only to reappear in Realm of Chaos - maybe it just suffers from instability.

But then there's Chaos stuff in Forces of Fantasy that disappears completely from 2nd / 3rd and WFRP only to reappear in RoC as well, which makes me wonder about the history of the composition of the document - most of it being completed well before 3rd was published, and not really taking into account many of the changes that 3rd introduced.

One of the advanages of multi-rule book games is you can just add stuff at a later date to increase or adjust stuff.. one of the downsides is things can be a little more hit and miss and you kinda have to spend way more to understand the rules and get bits..
