2nd Edition Eldar

Elbows

Serf
This has been whored out on a few other pages and Facebook, but I figured I'd add it here. While perhaps a bit Middlehammer for some folks, it's a retro army from back when I started collecting in early high school. I went on to other things and recently got a bug up my ass to get some old minis and paint them up. After a few weeks/months on ebay I ended up with quite an army...and the painting began.

The majority of these are ebay rescue projects (buying up painted minis, stripping and re-doing them) supported by vehicle plastics.

More on the way slowly but surely.

Yeah it doesn't show well in the picture (particularly on some monitors) but it's actually a very dark bronze from Vallejo (similar to the old Tin Bitz colour from GW back in the day).

I saw these on Lead Adventure. Really nice, mate. I'm furious that the flat bases look so good because I want to try it myself after basing the beginnings of my new armies with GW bases!

Well, it helps that I may be playing 2nd edition some, but maybe not even any official 40K. With the ridiculous change in basing sizes etc. I'm sure plenty of my figures won't be "official" for modern gaming standards. I definitely prefer the flat simple Renedra bases. My friend also finally showed me that Renedra do make 30mm bases in addition to the 25/40's that I always use. This means I can base wobbly guys like Swooping Hawks and Warp Spiders on the 30's (probably Wraithguard as well).

I have a chunk of figures drying at the moment, more in a few days.

And more Guardians to protect the Craftworld!

You'll see some mixed meltaguns and flamers in there - converted from lasgun fellas.

i like the colourscheme very much. out of interest, are those 2p pieces you;re using as bases? if so what's the reasoning?

Nope, just 25mm Renedra flat bases. I dislike slotta-bases. Always have. Prefer the smaller/simple Renedra stuff. I have some 30mm I'll be using for Wraithguard/Warp Spiders...maybe Swooping Hawks and 40mm bases are used for the grav platforms etc.

Finished up some leaders (my dip went a little wonky so I'm not overly pleased with them...but I definitely can't be assed to strip and repaint them!). My guardians are ready to walk alongside Khaine when called!

Thanks Suber, I made a silly mistake...I always use cheats to get decent table-top armies done. For some reason I decided on a scheme using white...just a terrible idea. The dip works on everything BUT white, and I didn't put two and two together before painting. Now I'm stuck with it (but should be done with guardians). As you can see, all my Aspect Warriors are primed a single colour...helmet, weapons and bits painted up...dipped...and that's pretty much it. Nothing difficult but produces a simple good looking gaming paintjob very quick.

Nicely done Sir, I've a few of these in the attic, which one day I'll get round to painting, one day. Good use of colour.

I think they look great - no need to repaint any of those. Impressive speed too, even when considering the dip method. I can't even paint the base coats in such a high pace.

BTW, I noticed you use these flat bases. Is that because of the aesthetics or a practical choice?

Great army. It would be nice to see a whole army photo sometime. Basing scheme looks good to, i bet they look great on terrain.

Very impressive for such swift work. I like the look of the flat bases any chance of a bit more info on them and your basing technique?

Thanks folks.

The bases are a simple aesthetic choice (always disliked slotta-bases). They're a combination of Renedra plastic bases (25, 40, and some upcoming 30). The method is simple: clip figures off slotta-bases sprues, file down feet, glue them to the base (rough side of the base down), and use Ultramax wood glue - dip around in a mix of three sizes of ballast...press gently with my finger and wipe away the edge. Once the model is primed/painted/dipped then it's just a once over with brown and dry-brushed and add some grass tufts.

The advantage here is that the wood glue Ultramax or whatever is exceptionally strong, and then the dip really holds all of the ballast to the base, no risk of brushing or flaking off.

Here is an army shot (before the Banshees), it's about 40-50% finished at this point.
