2nd/3rd Ed Warhammer for small skirmish games

smiler

Vassal
I've never played any edition of the Fantasy flavoured Warhammer and was wondering if the early editions would be good for a small scale skirmish game. I'm thinking 5 to 20 models per side, no formations kind of thing. I've heard they're similar to RT/2nd ed 40k so the familiarity is a big plus over having to learn a new ruleset from scratch.

I'm asking because I've got 7 or 8 Asgard and Grenadier dwarfs that I'm going to paint up and want a small army of goblins and it'd be nice to have some rules to use them with. Assuming I find an opponent of course :/

That set up is, in effect, how the Realms of Chaos warband games go - limited numbers of generally individually moving figures. I suspect (and more experienced players will be able say whether I'm right or not) that you have two options:

1. Ignore all unit and formation rules and just go for it
2. Have "units" but treat them as skirmishers as per the 3rd Ed. rules (I don't know 2nd at all, but it probably has something similar)

Let me know how it goes!

My best advice here is just use the RT rules with Fantasy figures (Of course limit/removed weapons at your choice), seems like the easier way to go :). Oh and I have tried this many moons ago, it does work quite well.

:) that was my 1st instinct to be honest, I just thought the conversion might be a lot of work especially as I don't have anyone to play against at the moment so it's all academic! This fantasy project is mostly about picking up some of the fantasy minis I really like and having some variety to paint. Plus they can be used in D&D games.

Are there any rules that might be worth transferring over? I mainly wondered if arrows and cavalry have any simulationy rules in WFB, plus rules for fantasy stuff like chariots (as a vehicle?), giant ridable monsters etc. And where would be best to find unit profiles? Easier to lift existing ones after all!

I'm planning on getting small bands of:

dwarfs - can use squat profiles. Cannon/warmachines using RT weapons?

Goblins - gretchin profiles I guess.

Lizardmen (using the mid 90s metal Skinks) - don't know, I guess they'd be similar to goblins, maybe smarter?

Humans (prob use bretonian peasants) - easy!

I hope you guys don't mind me brainsplurging here :)

Well It all depends on what you class as Skirmish really, in my mind a skirmish game has no large monsters, chariots or cannons so I didn't have to worry about moving them across.

But as WhFB3 and early RT are much the same you might as well just port the the rules and profiles straight out of the WhFB3 rulebook, later as RT grew and expanded with various books it grew away from WhFB3. Early RT and late RT are very different beasts.

Ah come on  one cannon and one chariot is all I'm asking for! Maybe a cannon on a chariot (a tank?). Point taken though, I just see those wyvren riders and want an excuse to buy one :)

I guess starting small and experimenting is my best bet, thanks for indulging me on this one. When I start getting stuff painted up I'll post it, hopefully that can make up for my wittering :)
