Post: 2022 miniature painting in review…
Well, This is embarassingly late….2022 is over and to be quite honest I have mixed feelings about the year. I started off feeling very positive about the year, it was busy at work and I had big plans to do a lot of painting, as we do every year. However, I definitely lost my mojo quite early on and felt immense pressure to complete a commission I’d taken on.
Painting wise. I kept looking at my ever-burgeoning lead pile and didn’t really know where to start. As so often is the case, I picked a couple of recently acquired figures and started with those. The first one completed was ZZAN´DOR a fantastic #chaos mutant from @knightmareminiatures I have had a love-hate relationship with this figure.
Based on games workshops Zygor snake arms, which I always wanted to get, but found eBay too expensive. Then, I found this beauty as a proxy, but I found him hard to get started on and rather daunting.
I painted for as long as I could and I still think it could be better, but almost every miniature tells you when it’s time to stop. I hope I’ve done it justice? I was quite pleased with the use of mosses on the base, which id collected on a local walk. I think they make for great Ferns.
Next up was one of a 2 figure set. ME35 Beorn as a bear. I acquired the man versions ages ago and he’s still not been completed. however, the bear seemed like a fairly easy figure to attempt and complete. and to be fair, it was.
A while ago I lost out in an auction on eBay for some Lord of the Rings minis. @oriental_heroes kindly sent me a couple of figures to dry my tears
. This is the first of them, Beorn as a bear. Really easy to paint but I think an impressive figure on the base. What do you reckon?
Next up was Saruman. This figure was another eBay snag. I had been trying to get hold of LOTR old minis for a while and whenever I saw them at a reasonable price I was grabbing them. This mini was easy to paint.
I think I painted the whole thing a cream colour and then dry brushed a million times with White until I’d gotten the desired effect. the face was standard Fleshtones, and the hair and beard were painted black then dry brushed grey and then white.
I like to collect little groups of figures and complete the sets. Not everything just the ones I really like. One such group is the mutant chaos goblins. I’ve got the whole set now but a couple of them are in for a repaint.
The client was in America and we’d struck a deal to do some painting in exchange for some figures. He’d kept his part of the bargain and sent the miniatures over but I was painting the minis at a glacial pace.
I decided to knuckle down and get on with it. I really am a man of my word and believe that if you say you are going to do something, then come hell or high water, you should do it, or die trying.
I think I might have posted something about these already but I finally managed to get hold of a couple of Halflings of the pre-slotta variety, that I used to have in my collection and then one day didn’t. Now these two have been painted up and are back in the collection. I had fun painting these because I just love their little pudgy faces.
This orc isn’t good. Not everything Is do is great, in fact, not much at all…but I post it as a record of progress. In many ways it’s cathartic and some form of painting legacy. If I die young, they might say…” well, what did he do?” and the answer is of course… construct a lot of rather pointless but mildly entertaining blogs.
This Goblin standard bearer was another Ebay rescue. I feel compelled to grab ass many decent old minis as possible and show them some love and paint. This one isn’t too bad a paint job in my opinion, but there’s something about it that doesn’t quite fit in my general collection. Not sure what, it might be the skin tones, being a bit darker than what I normally do. Oh well, you have to experiment or you stagnate.
Goblin Standard Bearer.
Again, another eBay rescue …initially, I didn’t have wings for him…I picked it up super cheap because, I presume the owner felt it was a lost cause. The sword arm was also broken and proved a real pain to fix. Anyway, eventually I fixed it and managed to get some wings from a kind soul via a Facebook group.
Not sure it’s the best paint job I could have managed, but I’d kind of lost interest by the time it was actually ready to paint. Tried to do a bit of OSL….without actually having any knowledge about it. It’s meant to look affected by flame anyway.
I am lazy sometimes and I never bother to find out what the names of certain minis are. Hence this one just being called Boyl mini. I’m sure someone from the community will know the answer. I submitted this chap as my entry into the painting competition. TBF it looks better to the eye than it does on camera
. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.
Whilst at Boyl, I always try to buy a few figures to support them for putting on the event. This time I bought some cowboys. they are great but I only managed to paint one fully before getting distracted. I shall return to them though as they are cool. I also snagged a few Kev Adams “pissed up” goblins. Again, only one is completed. Here they are …
I like Skaven a lot. Most things by Jes Goodwin is popular with me. I quite like the painting here…its a bit different from my other Skaven…but like I say, we have to evolve..But like a lot of figures I buy a bunch of them and paint one. I really ought to do a whole batch. I will one day. Maybe.
the Wizard is from Geoff Soloman Simms’ box st the Woods. A Kickstarter I backed. again another figure from the group that I haven’t finished. Still, quite nice minis, and great proxies for the “grey company” from Lord of the Rings. The Orc is the first version of Harborth. I just love all the old Pre-slotta Orcs so this fitted right in.
Right, that’s it. Not much painted in 2022, but tbh I had a lot on and a lot of that spilled into this year too. I’ve done a few bits this year, but not much. hopefully the roundup post for 2023 will be a bit better.

Another Proxy for a rare miniature
